Yup. He's probably looking at the AC power rating on the rear. Total newbie, lol.

Moved the "monster" up to the addition and the SX-434 to the test bench in the basement. I felt the SX-1050 should be seen, heard and enjoyed while it's little cousin is much easier to spin around in order to connect other equipment to. The SX-1050 literally hurts my ears approaching 1/2 volume..

$50 American for the pair delivered to PP town. These are heavy (a good thing for speakers) I pulled the drivers, visually inspected & ohm'd them. Then checked the interior, the gaskets, cross-overs and binding posts. All appear good with the obvious woofers needing a re-cone. This is not hard to do with the re-cone kits on eBay, by the way.

Shot score! Last night I picked up a mid-80's Sony ST-S555ES tuner for $5.00. It's a little scuffed up, but not terrible, and these things are well regarded amongst audiophiles. Retailed at $450 when new! Instead of regular RCA jacks in the rear it uses a 4 pin mini DIN jack, which is supposed to be run through Sony's "Audio Current Transfer" adapter, and of course that wasn't included. No problem, there's a quick mod using a couple of 620 ohm resistors which will allow it run without the Sony adapter. The last one sold on eBay without the adapter went for $70, so I think I did okay. Can't wait to get it modded and "on the air". www.thevintageknob.org/SONY/sonyes/STS555ES/STS555ES.html

Well, it ain't pretty as far as the soldering job goes, but it works like a charm.

Not sure what all the fuss is over this particular Sony. Both my JVC T-X55 and the tuner in the Pioneer Sx-1050 blow this thing away in terms sensitivity and selectivity. EBay, here it comes!

Caught up to Spitfire there on Saturday morning. I looked for some specific tubes but struck out. Lots of old AM radios there but not many CB's this time around. Some decent stereo stuff was there, especially speakers (something I don't need) I would say Friday morning is the time to go as I probably missed a bunch of stuff from the first wave of sellers.

Receiver Shoot-Out: Vintage vs. High-Tech"Even with all the levels carefully matched, and even in conditions where none of the receivers were ever pushed past their limits, the Pioneer SX-1980 simply beat the hell out of the other receivers."

Not vintage by any means, but I was a little bored at lunch and snapped a pic of my desktop system at work. A JVC head unit pulled from one of my past cars powered by a big ol' wall wart, 2 amps IIRC. I painted the case with a textured gun metal spray paint and stuck four little rubber feet on the bottom. The speakers are Dayton Audio brand through Parts Express in Ohio I got on sale for about $30. It sounds fantastic, but being in a "work environment" I never have a chance to enjoy its full potential, which would surely get me fired. This unit was my inspiration... www.parts-express.com/lepai-lp-s60-4x25w-desktop-mini-amplifier-with-remote-usb-mp3-media-card-fm--310-306For some reason we lose power here at work on a fairly regular basis, and when we do I need to re-enter all the preset stations and tone settings on the JVC head unit, a major PIA, especially after walking in first thing in the morning. I don't like to be inconvenienced by such trivial things, so I upgraded. I took to eBay with a $50 budget and started doing some research otherwise. I landed on the Yamaha RX series receivers from the late 80's/early 90's. They were reviewed well when new, have decent tuner specs (that's all I'll be using this for), seem to hold up over time and are reasonably priced. I scored an RX-530 in great shape from the original owner, with the original remote and manual for just over $51. Not too shabby... Attachment Deleted

Now you just need a 10" powered sub woofer and wrap it in a large COSTCO Chezz-It box, haha

Well, it's a good thing you weren't in an environment where you could have cranked it up. A 2 amp wall wart would have screamed for mercy when the volume was cranked. That's just not enough current to provide for any kind of volume above "Cubicle wide".

A couple weeks ago I traded my reel to reel deck for three sets of speakers. Really, the only ones I was interested in were the Pioneer CS-G403's. They pair nicely with the big ol' SX-1050 and they look great IMHO. The others were a lower end set of Pioneer CS-G105's, which go great with the SX-434 I got from Sandbagger, and also a pair of Baby Advent 3's in need of woofer surrounds. CS-G403... MCS 3249 Stereo receiver and a pair of MCS 8320’s Very nice! I always liked the MCS components, and from what I've read, many of their higher end offerings were well built.
