Whups!
An attempt to fix a problem on the cbtricks.com web forum crashed the database. It will allow you to log in, but no posts can be viewed.
The PM function still works. I'm getting plenty of them asking what happened.
Bennie is on the problem, and has lined up some expert help to unravel the crash. Until they get it fixed, only PMs will continue to function on that forum.
Found one odd quirk to the breakdown. If you click on a member's avatar, or use the "Search for Members" feature, the member's info page has a "show posts" link on the left of the page. It's meant to let you quickly see that member's last ten or so posts.
That feature still works. This tells me that the message database hasn't been totally creamed. Best I can tell it's the indexing system for the database that crashed, and NOT the file containing the message data.
A tiny bright spot in the picture.
Wish him luck. The good kind, of course.

Hopefully he backs his databases up. I've seen more than a few forums close down due to either hackers or some other "glitch" that crashed their databases and the owners had no way to recover what they lost. So yes, I wish him good luck. Fingers are officially crossed.

The forum is completely separate from the main CBT site.
Should have no impact on it.

The Forum Host has a Forum that I had a look at out of curiosity www.simplemachines.org/community/index.phpWill CBTricks' problem be labeled a Crash or an Attack ? I had seen Bennie had logged in to the Forum... I know many might consider it an Attack in order to attempt to convince Bennie to keep the Membership closed..... I'll say it again, I believe keeping the Membership closed is foolish... How many Members use it currently on a regular basis ? Less than I can count on my 2 Hands.... It seems ALL Online Forums Members' usage is diminishing with the passage of time... It might be due to the Number of Groups increasing, such as the usage of Yahoo Groups, Google Groups or Facebook which are FREE Platforms... Who knows Perhaps interest in the Hobby is decreasing as a whole Once again, just some ramblings or thoughts I had.....

I suspect the decline in 'net-wide forum activity is one of those "all of the above" things. What comes along next takes the place of what came before. It's called "creative destruction" or "evolution".
Bennie was attempting to fix some other thing when it went south. Can't see how it can be classified as an "attack". Just Murphy's Law, best I can tell.

In the 90's you had USENET. in the 00's, you had internet forums. Now we have social media-type groups. Each one slowly replaced the method before hand. Except for us diehards who don't like change.......

I don't mind change, when it's not mandatory.
I still don't FaceTweet, or SnapBook. My offspring think I'm an old fogey, but they still remember having to watch for upturned DIP chips on the floor when they were learning to walk upright. Learned quickly not to step barefoot onto an upturned 28-pin ROM on the floor. They decided that getting stabbed in the foot 28 times at once was not appealing.
And when social networks become mandatory, I'll probably resist that, but for now I have no reason to spoil anyone else's fun. I'm such an old goat that I can't stand a display screen smaller than my laptop, let alone smaller than the palm of my hand.
Like peeking through a keyhole.

I can't read the tiny screen, and the super tiny touch screen keypad is far too easy for me to fat-finger, and at that point it becomes more of an exercise in frustration than convenience. I find it ironic that we, as a society, demand larger and larger HD flat screen TV's, but at the same time will sit there and watch a TV show on a 3" smart phone screen. That just doesn't make sense to me. I do enjoy computer communications, so I participate in forums and I do have Facebook. But that's it. And I'm either at a desktop computer or my laptop. Most of those other sites, like Instagram are smart phone centric, so I'm out of the picture by default. But at least I won't be walking into fountains or into traffic because my nose is stuck in a phone looking for pokey-mons......

I do have a couple of laptops. They last only so long. The rest of my computers are what the young folks call "Grampa Boxes", desktop machines. Another dying breed.

Well, Once again I voiced my opinion about the Membership Lock-down there, as one can post in the "background"... Hopefully, Bennie will Open the Membership... Of course, a couple Members already opposed my Idea and there answer was, in not so many words, to go and start my own Forum... Given the length of time the Website has been down, I doubt it's getting fixed...
