so i assembled the super penetrator today. it went together well, although i think before i get it up in the air i may put heavier hose clamps on the joints. i dont have access to a antenna analyzer. so i put the antenna on a temporary mast. and hooked up a radio and meter to it. took awhile to get the swr where i wanted it. ended up being pretty close to 1:1 on my meter. i had the antenna about 12 feet off the ground when adjusting. im hoping when i get it up on the mast it is still good. this may be a silly questio, ive been away from radio for awhile. when i adjusted the antenna, i used a radio with 4 watts output, about a 100 feet of coax. when i get the coax into my radio room. and use considerably more power, will this affect swr readings?

You did a good job tuning the antenna. with 12' of pole and if it was not near any trees, buildings or other objects, when you raise it up, it should stay where you tuned it. The amount of power has no affect on SWR. If you find that you SWR climbs up a lot when the amp is on, that usually indicates that the amp is throwing out harmonics.

Well today I made a ugly balun for the bottom of the mast on the super penetrator. I don't know if I needed to. I used to use a imax antenna. And the balun worked good with that antenna. The antenna is the first thing I'm doing on setting up a base station. So I won't know how things work until I get the shack up and running. Grounding is my next step. Ground rod for antenna, and another ground rod for radio equipment. Is this Overkill?

Those are usually only needed on antennas which lack radials (like the A99 and Imax), which provide the necessary decoupling that prevents RF currents from running down the coax shield and radiating. When it comes to grounding, there is never "too much". But bear in mind that grounding won't completely protect all of your equipment from a direct lightning strike, but it should reduce the collateral damage quite a bit.

i got the super penetrator up. Ive had a a99, imax, and a maco v58 before. it was at a different location, the penetrator is by far the best ive had. reall good ears, and good on transmit. im very happy with it.

A true .64 wave ground plane antenna is the best omni-directional antenna you can get. The SP, the I-10K, and a few other makes of these metal monsters will perform the best. To get any more signal gain would mean a step up to a directional antenna.
