This old transistor 40 ch radio trans and receives...but when I unkey mike receive drops way down...can still hear but low..?What would cause that..dirty relay?Thanks.DQRR

If tapping on the case of the relay causes the receiver's signal level to fluctuate, this would point to a 40 year-old relay that's becoming unreliable.
Cleaning the contact points is an option if you can reach them without mangling the mechanism. The smaller the relay, the less likely this is the help, as a rule.
Moving parts tend to fail first.
