Hi everyone , I've loved Browning radios for years ... in fact , I love older radios in general (Browning , Tram , DAK , and so many more). I've been looking to buy a Browning base station for awhile now . The problem is , Browning equipment is not in huge supply in my area . In fact , there has only ever been 1 or 2 that I can recall being in my area , and those have vanished . So I do a lot of ebay searches to see what's out there . The problem is , I've bought CB equipment before on ebay in the past , that was "cheaper" ... and like many other people , I was burnt . So I definitely don't dare to invest $500/$600/$700 (or more) in something on there , and get burned again .
So I was wondering what is everyone's views on purchasing Browning equipment on ebay ... has anyone here ever bought their Browning equipment there , and if so ... was it a good experience ?
If any of you did buy equipment from ebay ... I'd love to hear your stories , good or bad ... thanks

If any of you did buy equipment from ebay ... I'd love to hear your stories , good or bad ... thanks The best advice I can give is stay away from anything on a yellow table. It's way overpriced and the seller (Superhawk) is a known scam artist. Any old tube radio will need some level of work to get it to play optimally again. Tubes weaken, electrolytic capacitors dry out and lose value, crystals can drift, and even some resistors, which have a lot of current pulled through them over the years, will change value. So a 40+ year old radio will need an overhaul. You might get away with only needing to replace a few parts right away. But eventually their age will catch up with them, and you'll end up replacing more parts as time goes on. So you can either bite the bullet and do it all at once, or you can piecemeal them as they fail. If you are technically inclined and do your own work, the piecemeal approach will probably work. But if you have to pay a tech bench time each time you have to get the radio looked at, it's probably best to have it taken care of all at once.

Have no fear ... I have been warned by one of my local CB'er friends about the dreaded "Yellow Table" ... That clown is trying to sell an ARF 2001 for $2,500 . The ARF is another radio that I've been looking for , for quite a few years now . So I'm well aware of their value , and what they usually sell for .... and $2,500 is 3 - 4 times more than what the ARF 2001 usually sells for

40 year-old cars tend to come in two varieties.
The ones that need to have thousands of bucks spent to overhaul the age and mileage issues.
And the ones that have had this money already spent on it.
The difference in asking price is easy to figure out.
But with a 40 year-old radio the difference between 'original' and 'working' is tricky to establish from pictures alone.
Not so different from the car in a front yard with that "for sale" sign, and the grass grown up around it. "Just needs a battery" they say.
Non-working or barely-working radios routinely bring the same price as a properly rebuilt and working radio.
Best of luck telling them apart before they get your money.

Tuff but exciting situation to be in. I have found that it may take a few tries to get an inexpensive used radio that works or is at least a few tubes and crystals away from working. WARNING. This could be a form of eBay gambling that can be addictive You can keep the non-working units for parts as after you have a few, you may be able to combine them into a working unit or recycle them on eBay as I'm sure there have been a few radios that have been around the block as much as the village bicycle. Asking on forum sites and facebook groups is another way of getting leads as you did here. Sometimes folks on Craig's list will ship so try a national search. I love this new ebay definition of "TESTED" ... "Both units turn on. Lights work as it is switched from AM, LSB, and USB. I don't have a microphone or antenna to test any other functionality." Just waiting to read..."See my other auction for matching microphone" Never mind that the channel selector displays 84 on a Mark IV. Oopsie. Oh and he has a TRAM D201 and Mark III for sale "TESTED". Looking forward to use "TESTED" in my next ebay item's auction description for that warm and fuzzy feeling. www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Browning-Golden-Eagle-Mark-IV-4-Tube-Ham-Radio-Gear-TESTED/202200999905?hash=item2f141e67e1:g:AJsAAOSwXOVaZ-Nh

Hmmmm.
"Tested".
I think "Passed" would be better.
Then again, "Flunked" would still qualify as "tested".

Only reason I know that it would go to channel 86 is if it has the aftermarket NOMAD kit in it? I had one that went to channel 99 on the transmitter but I never tried it there. It eventually got stuck on channel 16 & I sold it to someone in Kansas as I recall. He messaged me once & said he fixed it but never sent the video that he promised of it actually working.

If the single point LEDs on each side of the digits are red, it's not one of ours.
Unless someone changes them out, our synthesizer has a yellow LED on the left, and a green on on the right side of the digits. Identifiable at a glance. That was the idea.
And our tuning knob will click as it's turned. We didn't use the spring-return switch used by the factory setup.
My best guess would be that it's original.
One of the problems the Mark 4 would have is to remember what channel to wake up. Was built to be channel 1.
And sometimes it wouldn't. But that's what the knob marked "RESET" is for. To knock some sense into the primitive digital channel selector when it got confused.
Hint: Have you EVER seen ANY other radio with a control marked "Reset"??
Neither have I.

I personally have bought a lot of radios and other related equipment. I always have got what i wanted and in the shape i expected. I ask question about the items and have gotten good and honest answers. I just recently bought a Mark iv and im very happy about shape and price.Like anything you need to research before you buy .

Two things I would try in your local area. Put a wanted ad for the Browning you want. Go look at it if you get a reply. Also try ham fest, you can find some at those. And hopefully you can test it before you buy. I like many others have been burned on eBay. So unless the seller is near. I would stay away, just like the yellow table. Last year I sold my MK III on eBay for $350. It worked and i added extra tubes a switch and a manual. So the buyer got a extra 75-$100 in parts. I sold it cheap and the buyer loved it. So not all eBay sales are crap. You can find a good radio on there, it’s just hard work searching for one and vetting the seller. Good luck in your search

That Yellow table also has a Golden Eagle D-104 that he has listed as 24kt Gold? Strange that Astatic NEVER made a 24kt Gold version? Guess he had his local jewelry story melt down some of his Gold Bars for him & apply a few coats to that D-104. LOL

The American-Bicentennial edition D-104 from 1976 was gold plated. Mighty thin gold plate, I might add. Wears away pretty fast. Had a brown coil cord.
It's been years since that last one of these I saw with a good element in the head. The cartridge in this model seemed more prone to fail than the average old D104.
Could just be the age, though.

Now the hawk states a MK 4 he’s selling for $2500 has been updated by barkett. Maybe he thinks that makes his eBay post more real? And his feedback is still 💯% ?

Not sure why he'd have Barkett do any work on it since Superhawk has been a dealer since 1492, with Columbus using the Browning to find the new world.... (kids, that's sarcasm. friendly warning not to get triggered)

I wouldn't think he'd be able to sell ice in the desert....

Super Squalk seems to get some decent stuff to sell but not like the "guy in Canada" that must have a time machine and just keeps bringing out classic NIB CB radios for sale. What is his eBay seller name...Stuff4U or stuff four you? Stuff4you? I can't remember but wow. he sure has the stuff. If you find him on there look at what CBs he has sold over the years.

He was fairly reliable, until I did the big mistake of dealing with him outside of Ebay. Never did get that NIB Cobra 142 GTL. Apparently is got 'lost in the postal service'.
And this was years ago.
