Hello to everyone,
Thank you for adding me to the forum.
I have a Royce 642 and I will be getting it recapped soon. I would like upper and lower channels put in, is this radio easy to do this to? Is there a certain 'kit' to use?
Any suggestions on where to look for info regarding tune-up and general work to be done to it? Any opinions as to comparing this radio to the Cobra 139 XLR Base?
The old radio is a talker already, I'm looking for several good years for it.
Thank you, Farmer

The old radio is a talker already, I'm looking for several good years for it. Thank you, Farmer The Royce 642 is a nice radio and a fairly good performer. It's a bit disappointing in the PLL expansion area though. Most Royce PLL's will only go up to 27.595 and nothing below (64 channel capability). You might be able to get more out of it with some sort of expansion kit, but I've never played with those. On the other hand, the Cobra 139XLR has a fantastic PLL in the 858. It has a 399 channel total capability (VCO is good for about ~200 of that range). In my opinion, based on all of the available export radios and easily modified ham rigs, if you want a ton of extra channels (and with the band nearly dead, I have to wonder why), I would grab up one of the exports, and use it on the extras, and keep the vintage Royce stock and enjoy it that way.

Mr SandBagger,
That sounds like good advice.
