Ok , so I was having a discussion with a friend about AM only radios ... and this question came up .

Is it possible to convert an AM only radio , like maybe a President Dwight D (for example) into a SSB radio ? Or is an AM radio always going to be just an AM radio ?

I am 99.99% sure that I already know the answer to this question ... but there's always that .01% chance that I could be surprised , and find out something I didn't know .

So I figured I'd ask .

I'll stop short of saying it's impossible. Most things are possible with enough determination, money, and time. But it's not economically feasible. You could pick up a used Washington or Madison for much less than it would cost of try to get SSB out of a Dwight D.
