Does anyone here on the forum have Direct TV? I am having it installed on Monday and just wondered if anyone uses it and if so how do you like it or dislike it!
I have Comcast Cable now and I am tired of the rates always going up and the customer service stinks. Plus Direct TV is about $17.00 cheaper ;D

A couple of years ago I signed up for Direct TV and for two weeks they kept making appoinments to hook me up and they never did show up. I had the dish here and the box so I sent it back and got a refund. I have Adelphia cable here and it's crummy and expensive. I'm leary of satellite TV. If it goes haywire in the middle of the night or on a weekend you might not get service for days. If the box blows you have to send it in and they send another one, meanwhile you have no TV. Plus a long contract that you still have to honor even if you don't like their service. Just my opinion after the bad experience.

I had it for about 3 years. I dropped it recently as $38 for the cheapest plan was too much for me right now. I didn't have any trouble with it outside of when it rained or heavy cloud cover or snow. But I learned a little trick. Just take a garbage bag and put it over it and tie it and you still have signal even during rain.

Grumpy,
We have Direct TV at our places in Alabama and Florida. Have had it in Al for about eight years now. Our house is about 6/10 of a mile in from the road so cable was not an affordable option.
The service has been great. Picture and sound quality are outstanding and all digital. We have two local vendors so service has been really good, but we have never needed a service call. We went to Direcway at both locations for our ISP and that too is first class.
We currently have four recievers at each house and I think that each add on is still about $5 a month, what a deal!
Best ...Quarrles

Dish Network here. Expensive but pretty effective. Thinking about turning it off. I lived without cable/sat. for several years and I can do it again. I do lose signal in a heavy rain or snow. Never heard of the garbage bag idea, and don't understand why that would work.

If you buy a sat dish you can buy a weather cover that does the same thing. When the dish gets snow on it it causes you to lose the clear signal. When rain gets on the sensor and dish the same thing happens. A bag keeps the elements from distorting the signal. If your looking for a technical explanation that's the best I can do If you get on the websites of the dish companies they explain it . They also tell you spraying your dish with a silicone to cause a non stick surface can help. Pam even works. But the bag has worked the best for me.

One thing, tho, If you're watching TV in a T-storm, you prolly shouldn't be watching TV anyway! Rover

Well the Direct TV was hooked up yesterday. This is so much better then Comcast Digital Cable. The picture is unreal, the sound is better and a whole lot more channels to choose from.
The installer was very good and really knew his stuff, not like the Comcast jerks they send out
I really wish that I would have switched a long time ago!
So far I am very happy ;D

Ron, we don't have to worry about snow getting on the dish down here but the spring time thunder storms and late summer tropical storms will definately block out our signal. That is why I also have an antenna set up so I can see the weatherman on the local stations when the weather gets really nasty.
