I prefer the ping over a roger beep any day. I do as well, and I credit that as a combination of uniqueness, and nostaligia. But I suspect that if there were as many Brownings on the air as there are radios with roger beeps, they'd eventually become annoying as well....

Years ago in the 70's Sandbagger, we had so many Eagles in my area that had Extra long pings. You would get tired of talking to the person with the extra long ping when he or she would acknowledge you with a yes or no answer in our conversation. Heck...you had to wait forever for that "yep or no". It got old quick and was actually a welcome sound to hear a good old stock Eagle!! That's why I bought my D201 over the Eagle back then, because of the area having so dog gone many Eagles. I can tell you that I sure do Like the Eagle I have in my possession now and it will stay here along with my Trams until I become a SK for sure! Sniper

Sniper My Eagle has a switch for stock ping and extended. I normally leave it on the stock ping, because even as the radio operator, I have a hard time remembering to pause long enough to let the ping finish before I start talking. The stock ping isn't too bad to get used to but the long ping is just too tough to deal with after a while. I didn't live in a very deep pocketed area, so there weren't many Trams or Brownings in the local area. So when the Browning ping would show up, it was a welcome treat. So much so that many people tried to simulate the Browning ping with their own rigs. Most failed miserably though.

I'll take a roger beep over the massive echo and noise toys any day, though. A little echo isn't bad, but some people take it way beyond reasonable...

Heck...you had to wait forever for that I did a lot of modifications over the years on my radio equipment, but I was never tempted to change the ping length on the Brownings.

I too prefer the ping over a roger beep. I also prefer a Browning Eagle over any other radio. Too bad that they don't have a noise blanker, although the extra Demco Sattelit that fellow has is very tempting. I'm currently cleaning out my shop of all the tube type rigs except the three Brownings that I have. I have the first Golden Eagle that some people call and should have been called the Mark 1. It has an AGC problem in the receiver that shouldn't be a problem and it's totally stock. I have a MarkIII that has been modded with a Siltronix 90 and has a Nomad slider/buffer kit built into the transmitter. The SWR set control is now the mic gain. The receiver is the late production model and it's been modded to go above channel fourty and below channel one. no butchering and no holes, no extra switches and no power mod. I say let amplifiers increase the RF power if that's what you want. I'm also running a series 2 (R27, S23), Glen digital slider and Nomad slider/buffer kit in the transmitter and the receiver modded to go below channel one. Again, no butchering. I also find the extended ping annoying to the operator as well as the listener so I keep my pings factory stock. Back in the 1960's and 70's there were a few Brownings around but I can't remember any that had extended or prolonged pings. I also have an S23 transmitter for parts and an extra early production Mark III for parts. It probably could be repaired up and made to operate but I have another expensive project going. By the way, Sniper, we were calling for you during our Western Pa. Whiskey Sideband Net on Sunday night. Sleepy, 2W3105 was doing the moderator thing. I wont sell any radios or post anything on Ebay until I post what I might find for sale or parts on this forum. That's my boring two cents.

I also am running an old Series 2 (R27, S23) I like it the best out of all of the straight AM Brownings. I installed a Nomad slider/buffer kit in the transmitter and use a Glen digital VFO on it. At first the Glen wasn't working but 2600 repaired that and replaced a couple of caps in the transmitter for me. Greg Barkett went through the receiver because of low sensitivity and modded it to go 23 channels down and it's worked great for around six years. Trouble is with those is that they're not wide banded enough and the sensitivity drops off after about ten channels down. The receiver is now developing another sensitivity problem, just slight but it'll get worse. I suspect one or more of the Ktran transformers has gone bad. It's still quite usable but will go on the back burner after my main project is finished. Nice thing about the Brownings that I have is that a power mic isn't needed. I use an unamplified D-104 G Stand or Turner 454X mic on all three that I have. They sound like I'm running power mics.
