Tram Titan
Tram D201
Browning R27/S23
Browning Mark III
General SB-72
Sonar FS-2340
Sonar H
Robyn T240D
Lafayette Comstat 25B
Demco Super Satellite
CB Radios only!!! Well, out of my collection of radios, the radio with the best overall audio quality has to be the Tram D201, followed closely by the Browning Mark III. Next would be the Tram Titan IIa, but it still needs a little work. Lafayette Comstat 25. Radio's I've heard on the other end and was impressed by: Regency Imperial (Lots of punch. Maybe even too much) Demco Super Satellite Robyn T-123 (Anyone for broadcast quality?) Cobra Cam 88/98 Lafayette HA-410 (Not realy a CB rig, but close enough)

If were talking loud monster here it would have to be my Tram D201. That radio has high plate modulation and compression. And crystal clear LOUD audio!
And for sure! my browning MarkIII and IVA. Depending on what mic your using. A D104 works a heck of allot better on the III than a IV. There were changes made in the audio circuit on the IV/IVA models. They can be changed to match the III very easily. But I leave the audio curve the way it was designed. That being said a IV/IVA with a browning 776 is sweet. ;D

My Mark IVA might have the best all around audio but my two Teaberry Model T's really bark. When I'm on the way home from the beach and am having a little trouble hearing Betty above the noise level I'll ask her to "hit the switch". That would be an old D&A Hornet which is only 50 watts but with either the Model T or 240D really makes the audio jump. It doesn't boost the signel much but sure gives the audio a kick! For whatever reason this combination works really well. I was really lucky to find the Hornet since as you can sea from my other posts I let it go as I did most of the "stuff" I really liked! I got it back from the lady I sold it to many years ago. Should have played the lottery that day! Although I have never owened one (and I would like to) one of the best sounding radios I have heard was a Sonar FS2340.

I have had so many compliments on my Mark IV on how loud and CLEAR it was I would have to say the Mark IV with the 776 microphone. I have a Demco Super Satellite with the modulator, and they say its loud, but not as "clear" as the Mark IV. I also have a D201 which is an A-1 rig... It just doesnt ping when it keys up!

That's right DR. Rigamortis The 776 is hard to beat! It was custom manf. by Turner for browning. And so is the amp inside of it. That's why it works so well with these radios! Not just a name plate slapped on it.

I am a bit limited in my experience with tube radios, but the Blackface/Whiteface Johnson Messengers can be made to have outstanding audio with a couple cap changes...

I agree with most of the radios mentioned, but I have to add one that you don't usually find talked about very much, A USL Contact 23. I bought mine in the mid sixties and used a stock mike on it until I was able to afford a Turner +2. That radio and mic combo had some of the cleanest and loudest audio on the airwave back then.
I still own both the radio and mic and about 10 years ago I found another Contact 23 just in case I should need some parts.

I was just looking at one on ebay today and thought how much it reminded me of one of the old Lafayette transceivers ! Sniper OT2194

I think that the Tram D-201 is the best. You can't beat a 6L6 audio tube. The next is the Tram Titan or Titan II with the 6GM5 audio tube. Some had a 6GK6. Next, any radio with a 6BQ5 audio tube has killer modulation. The list starts with Browning, Tram 27E?, Demco, Robyn, Teaberry, Lafayette, Gemtronics. Next older Lafayettes with 6AQ5 tube. ..A Demco Modulator? God I love this old stuff!

Hey, Dave. I forgot to mention the 623 Hygain Utopia. I think that it's plate modulated. I have one around here. I know that you do too. This may even beat the Tram.
..btw- I have an old Lafayette HA-410 sitting around. I use to talk on it on CB about 1990-91. I put it in the shed back then & I just dug it out. ..It's not looking good. It sure did blow smoke when it was working!

A fine talking radio, even if it drifted all over the place until it completely warmed up. Spitfire has one now and it really sounds good. Nice warm audio. And yes, the Hy-Gain 623 is plate modulated, but the modulator is solid state. Still, it has very warm tube-like audio.

All of the radio's mentioned are fantastic. I have owned most of them at one time or another.
Just about any radio with a tube mic amp in it, and a Demco are going to SCREAM !!!
But I had a mint Tram Titan II with just a G-Stand D104 on it, and it was a MONSTER !!!
I had to pad down the mic so it would not peg the mod meter all of the time.
Too bad those radios did not have the same VFO setup as the D201's had.....

I have NOT owned many tube rigs but I have a couple NOW that are BOTH "LOUD & SWEET" & they are:TRAM D-201(Hand Wired) with an amplified ASTATIC D-104 & a BROWNING GOLDEN EAGLE MKIII with an amplified ASTATIC "GOLDEN EAGLE" D-104.The TRAM is a bit louder than the BROWNING but NOT by much & the TRAM also hears better than the BROWNING as well.I have owned a DAK MK IX & it could hold it's own as well in the audio department along with a BROWNING MKII many years ago! D201 and D201A hands down has an advantage over almost every commonly found CB rigs due to the ratio of the modulation transformer and the dynamic headroom in the modulator. Dunno how/why FCC ever certified that design. Someone was on vacation.
Most plate modulated CB sets have limited positive modulation capability by design. Several have very effective audio clipping which goes a long way.
The D201 has a fairly good audio compressor too. This retains human sounding audio while limiting splatter and improving communications effectiveness.
Hopelessly golden screwdrivered radios not withstanding.
