i got a cobra 29 i was wondering if i should put the varibale on the delta tune or the rfgain ? i also want to put a echo in and i guess i would put that on the delta tune no if i putr it on the delta what do i do with the wires on the delta put them together ? or leave them dead ?

The SWR Cal knob is the hands-down best choice.
The wires from the control can be soldered to a fixed resistor when you take them loose from the control. This will fool the SWR meter circuit into thinking that you have turned the CAL knob all the way up. This way, the SWR meter still works. As well as it ever did.
But the 5k resistance of that control is perfect to control a darlington power transistor in line with the driver stage.
And you don't have to kiss off any existing functions on the front panel.
