Vr16 is the AM modulation adjustment according to CB Tricks, you could try turning that up. I've had radios that don't show a forward swing from another transmitter and have had ones that do. Try a power mic if you don't already have one.

I own one, had to turn up the am modulation just a bit, but added a D104 amplified mic to it, now it swings..dk 4 watts high 20 on am, ssb dk same and high 24-25 watts..this is with the D104 amplified mic.

Yeah, turn up the modulation level and see what you have then. If you lower the dead key a bit you should get more modulation swing but a power mic will help for sure.

You really can't go by what other people see on their radio meter. Some radios won't show any swing while others will show lots of swing. If the radio has been tuned properly and shows forward modulation on a wattmeter I wouldn't be to concerned about it unless they say your modulation is low. Dropping the dead key to 3-4 watts will improve the swing they see and will take a load off of the single final in the 959. You said something about audio being low...........what type of mike are you running? Sometimes a mike change can do wonders for a radio.

Just try a good power mic and leave the modulation adjustment in the radio alone. You may want to turn the dead key down a little, maybe not.

First thing, some receiving CBs don't show swing on their radios. I have a TRC-455 that shows no swing. I had a Galaxy 949 and it showed all swing on the meter. If you want to know, get a peak reading meter and measure it yourself. You should not measure swing by listening from another radio's meters.
Secondly, I would not mod the radio. Adjust it for 100%, and that is enough, Those are loud AM radios to start.

SBE was notorious for backswinging. I bought several at very good prices because folks did not like that.....it didn't bother me at all. They talked well and I always lived out of town and didn't have to worry about bleedover at all. BC

The TRC-455 meters are rock steady, and don't move from the signal. I like it that way. When I gave people radio checks based on that, some got pissed off and said "what do you mean it's not swinging?" In fact, after one of the radio check, I had another person say that the his radio was reading swing, and my radio must have been a piece of crap. So people are too wrapped up in swing.
One other thing, remember that Colt I repair for my friend? His meters were ultra sensitive, and even though I calibrated them with 100uV on S-9, nearly everyone coming thru show 8-9 on the meter. My friend finally adjusted the meter to match my dead key on his Cobra 2000 meter.
