Hello : ) I don't know much about CB radios, but I'm trying to help my Dad locate something specific. A fellow truck driver told him that Galaxy makes a mobile CB radio that is 400-500 watts. I've tried looking all over for such a CB, but the most I've been able to find is the Galaxy Dx98VHP with 200 watts.
Do any of you know if Galaxy makes such a mobile CB? If so, can you tell me which model number? If not, do any of the other better name brands make a Mobile CB that has 400-500 watts? If so, which ones?
My Dad has been a truck driver for 35 years, but there was always a CB already in place for him in the trucks he drove, but now he has to purchase his own (that he can take with him when he's not working). He knows a little bit more about them than I, but not much.
Thank you in advance for any help any of you can give me : )

Hi, angelique. Galaxy has a mobile with a built in amplifier called a DX 95T, & a 98-something. They do put out a couple hundred watts or so, with over 200 channels. They cover the ten meter ham band , so you have to be careful where you transmit.
These guys on here can explain these export radios better than me, I'm still stuck in the '70s!

Hi Bob : ) Thank you for that suggestion, I will check those model numbers out and see if that is what he thinks he's looking for : ) Don't feel bad, everyone tells me I'm stuck in the 80's The 70's were good times too : ) Besides, at least when you spent a lot of money on something made in the 70's--Appliances, Furniture, Cb's, etc...You knew it was going to last for a long time. Anything made in the last ten years up to today has been completely useless and you just HOPE those things will last at least a couple years.

Tell your Dad to skip the Galaxy and take a look at the Ranger RCI-63FFC4.
Click the link below for a picture of it and the specs of the radio.
Ranger RCI-63FFC4
The selling price for these radios are around $600.00.
Be careful where you buy any of these types of radios from. These radios need to be converted and tuned properly. If you buy any such radio please make sure you buy it from someone who knows what they are doing. That is alot of money to spend and end up with a hacked up radio!

But that's about all I know since I, like Bob, am stuck on the old rigs from the 60's and 70's too.....

#smilies-42767# I had to chuckle. I clicked on the link and looked at the radio. In the write-up they state: "The Ranger RCI-63FFC4 amateur mobile transceiver offers exceptional value for Novice and Technician Class amateurs upgrading to Tech Plus and higher ", yet the radio does not have the only two modes that a tech plus can use on 10 meters - CW and SSB. Of course, we all know who the real customers are for this radio. But if they're going to lie about it, at least do it with some sort of believability........

Just one other thing to add. Many dealers will tell you these radios will do 400 to 500 watts. You can only get so much power out of a transistor. Don't be fooled by false claims. Trust me, there are many dealers out there that will tell you anything to make a sale. I will be more than happy to guide you in the proper direction as to where to buy one if you decide you want to buy. I just don't want to see you be ripped off. As I said, this is alot of money to spend to have this happen!

To continue with Tobestones logic, how many hams have chrome radios or want / use echo or talkback? Also, chrome heatsink??? What were they thinking? Chrome makes a great heat reflector!

#smilies-42767# ...and the CB band is full of hacked up radios. During my holiday Thanksgiving travel I was listening to channel 19 and there were many distorted jacked up radios. The audio of many truckers was so over modulated that it made some of them difficult to understand, and on top of that the same bozos had buried their voice in echo and delay. One of them could not seem to understand why people kept telling him his radio sounded awful. His radio had what I call an "I/O error" which means Idiot Operator.

Most drivers i know will talk within a mile or closer to one another,But like most drivers i know BIGGER is better. They have to be bigger then the truck next to them. The ones that drive through here can't hear most of the local base radios, becauce they have turned the rf gain and squelch so the truck next to them arn't killing there receive. Just my 2cent.

Also, chrome heatsink??? What were they thinking? Chrome makes a great heat reflector! Junior It's really no worse that someone putting a hot tube next to a BA Board like Tram did in a Tram D201 series.
Same could be said for M.H.Scott when they made the Dak IX and X. Why make such a big radio when it is half empty inside? Because the look sold the radio, it sure wasn't because of performance
I have to laugh when people talk about Ham Operators and echo and chrome radios. I know a ton of them who live near me that use them on the 11 meter band. I guess their thinking walked out the door when they turned on that export radio and started talking on 11 meters

Hello Again : ) Thank you everyone for all of your suggestions. I will show my Dad the Ranger Model and look for info on the Connex....He understands that no matter what he buys it will have to be "peaked" (I have no idea what any of that means ) He just asked me to do some research for him on what that other driver told him as he doesn't have the time and he's not all that internet-savvy Thanks Again

As noted, Connex has a 4300-300 and a bigger 4300-600 (?) that are pretty big...I did hear rumor of a bigger version of the Galaxy 98VHP a while back, but never followed up to see if it actually made production.
If he's going that big, he'd be better off with a clean radio into a standalone amp...that's a lot of heat to have enclosed in a radio chassis.
