I recently traded for a TRS Challenger 40 ch. am radio with very low audio on receive. I have to put the speaker up to my ear to hear it. Any advice at all will be appreciated.

I'm not familiar with that radio, don't know if it's transistor or a tuber. If it's a solid state rig and you have good transmit modulation I would guess that the problem might be the audio output transformer. If it's a tuber it could be a bad audio output tube but it might use the same tube for tx modulation and receive audio. Could just be that the receive needs aligned. Silly thought but maybe it's just a bad speaker, have you tried using an external speaker? These are just guesses in the dark and there may be other issues. Someone on this board that knows the radio may be able to help you better than me.

its a transistor radio. tried the external speaker with the same results.

Ok, that's a start. Next question is do you have good transmit modulation?

Then I would guess that it has a bad audio output transformer or the receive alignment is off. Still could be a capacitor or tranistor in the audio output section, maybe an open resistor somewhere. That's the best I can do without further bench testing, someone else on this board might be able to pinpoint your problem. I see that you're in Kentucky, if you're close to Louisville take it to Nomad Radio. Good luck

Another thought. Maybe the volume control is open, try shorting across two of the connections on it just stay away from the power connections on the end of the control. It could be that it's a squelch issue too. I'm sure you've checked but the squelch control isn't turned all the way on is it? Also make sure that the RF gain is turned all the way up if it has one or the pot may have gone bad, you can jumper across that too to find out. I'm out of ideas.

I'm still racking my brains. I don't know if that radio will receive without a mic connected but if it won't it could be as simple as the receive wire being broken off inside the the connector. Try another mic if you have one or take the connector apart and check for a wire that has come loose.
