Greetings all. I haven't had a radio in over 12 years. Then, I had a Cobra 25gtl with a K40. It collected dust mostly cuz I didn't know what I was doing. I listened more than anything.
Being interested again and having a perceived need for one now, I've been considering the following set up (other suggestion)...RCI2970n2 or dx, Preditor 10k, and Stump jumper 65 mic. I hear the 2970 is premium, as with the 10k.
What do you think about this set up and do you think I could do better for the money? New-Radio $375.00 plus 35 for tune/align, $65 for 10k (shaft only), $30 for mic. Of course I'll need coax, a mount and stringer.

Hello Synergy58, I personaly run the 2970dx and an old k40 that I have in my pu. The 2970 is a very nice and easy to use rig. If I were to purchase a new antenna, my own choice would be the wilson 5000, and as far as a mic goes, I run the stock mic since the radio has been peaked and tuned and the stock mic gives excellent results in my case. This is just my opinion and I'm sure others will chime in with there own. 73's ...Sniper...OT2194...Unit 305

The Predator 10k gets a tab bit better performance. The down side with the 10k is that if the coils get clogged with something, like say freezing over, it reduces the performance; the Wilson wouldn't have this issue. I hear a lot of good things about the rci2970n2 or dx. I've personally never used one. I need a good strong radio that will get me out there when I need it to. I'm more concerned with the mounting than anything else. I have a Dodge (Mercedes) Sprinter Van. The roof line is at 8'8". I go much taller and I'll be scraping every thing I go under. If I mount it anywhere else, I'll block the field. Not sure what to do?

I hit allot with the k40 on top of the roof too, like wash bay roofs and allot of low hanging tree branch's on back roads. Its a good thing that the whip on the k40 has allot of flex and I have never knocked it loose or bent anything to this point. my roof line is just under 7' and then you add the antenna on top of that and its over 11'. I think if the 10k isn't very flexible if I were you I would think twice about the Wilson since it has a whip like my k40 and is pretty forgiving when hitting overhead obstructions.
