ok mark III is online but still on the bench with new tubes and still a bit jumpy so going to run it another week at the shop and go from there.
now what kind of wattage readings am i to be looking at right now it keys 4.5 to 5 watts deadkey and swings to 22 to 23 watts
or should it be doing more or less
now where did i leave that Banana mic with the 2prong plug?

The MK III should key 1.5 - 3 watts and swing between 8 to 12 watts. Sounds like someone has changed or jumped the power resistors. 73

I'm signing on with gator about a resistor change/strapping. Don't know how it would get 20+ watts swing otherwise, but sounds like the tank (antenna matching) circuit isn't trimmed out for peak efficiency. With that kind of swing I'd imagine you'd see 8-10 watts deadkey also. Pop the transmitter bottom cover and see if you find something like this: Click here for large image - Dial-Up WarningMy MKIV was deadkeying 9, swinging 20+, and throwing out some really muddy audio until I clipped that red wire. Afterwards, I got a 3.5 deadkey and around 12 watts swing with beautiful audio reports. Good luck and 73. EDIT: BTW....props to Alan (Fixr) and Chris (2600) for the tips enabling me to correct the above and other issues and get my rig back on the air.

All depends if you want to maintain that stock/classic look of a MK III. Some people wouldn't want a MK III that has had the Mic changed from 2 to 4 pin. If you don't plan on ever selling this one. Than it is a matter of preference. As for a banana Mic. Good luck finding one that works for under $80.00 to $100.00. My MK III is all stock and I plan to keep it that way. I don't plan on selling it. But you never know. Hope this helps. 73

I always keep the original two pin mic plug set up on my Brownings but like Gator said, it's a matter of preference. The bananna mic, D104 G stand, and the Turner 454X work great.

Actually changing to a four pin connector is an improvement/upgrade. With a four pin it's easier to wire for different mics and you stand less of a chance of getting electrocuted because there's high voltage present. I just prefer to leave them original, at least with those connectors.

There is nothing defacing when changing the 2 pin to a 4 cobra style. It fits in the chassis without any modification. I almost upgraded my III to the 4 pin the IV uses. But it's oversized and I would not modify the chassis. Also the 2 pin requires you strip back the cord on your mic to solder it to the spring. The 4 pin saves your mic cords a bit too.

Hello....My MarkII is dead keying at about 3 to 4 watts and swinging to about 7 watts...is this normal? I see that it should be 1.5 to 3 watts dead key and swing to 8- 12... Also if I were to run a boot with this thing...what would be advisable?

All my Brownings including the Mark III put out 3 to 5 watts with a modulated swing around 12 to 14. Modulation at 100 % and clear, so 1.5 to 3 watts seems low to me. You definetly don't wan't to strap across power resistors. I use low drive sweep tube amps and driving them with that wattage results in a clean signal and clear modulation if the unit is tuned properly.

Yeah I thought that was to low of a dead key too tombstone..But then again without a factory specs...ya never know what it's supposed to be doing...I know the swing is different from AM to Side band on this one.. dead key's about 4 and swings to about 7 on AM And swings to 10 watts on Side band...No.......I would never strap it...But I now know what to look for in one if it has been....Thanxs!
