Does anyone know who made the 40-channel am/ssb radios for JCpenny? I have a base/mobile one and it is quite heavy and it is fairly complex looking inside the radio. It really performs well with great receive.

Most were made by Hitachi.

Thanks 2600. I looked everywhere and couldn't find out much info at all about JCpenny radios. I just got one that was new in the box, it is a mobile am/ssb 40-channel model 981-6248. It has great recieve and transmit. Really a pretty cool radio. Thanks again.

I'v seen a few JC Penney radios and they seemed to be well built. Back in the early seventies I used a 23 channel Pinto in my vehicle and it really barked. I'm not sure about unlocking the clarifier, someone around here should know.

I have a model 6241 j.c.penney and it is a very reliable am/ssb used for base station operaton. I was interested to find out about the Hitachi mfg. info. Hang on to yours, mine was given to me by a close friend (he got it in a yard sale for like $5) but I saw one in a pawn shop priced for $129 also a 6241, so they must be highly sought after and scarce................
