I understand there are 3 generations of President Madison radios. Can anyone tell me which ones are the better radios if I intend to add channels and use some power with it?
What is a slider?

My Master Edition manual for the Madison is showing two versions. The PLL chip is usually the main difference. www.cbtricks.com will probably show you any version of the radio that I don't have information on as well as the frequency expansion and tune up procedures. Either model of the Madison is satisfactory unless someone knows something that I don't. The frequency expansion is done by cutting certain traces on the circuit board that connect to the PLL chip and adding switches. The two chips that I'm showing are the 858 and 8719. What I see is the 858 will give you from 26.085 to 28.005 KHZ and the 8719 will give you 26.815 to 28.045 KHZ. You can also install an Expo channel expander kit that usually takes you from 40 channels below channel one to 40 channels above channel 40. (40 up and 40 down), if you can still find one. A slider has different applications. The clarifier on a sideband radio can usually be unlocked so that you can tune around or slide between different channels. Then there is the slider or VFO (variable frequency oscillator) that installs into and controls the oscillator so that you don't have crystal control anymore but a variable tuner setup that allows you to tune to different channels or slide anywhere within the slider's range and the radio's oscillator limitations. That's the best that I can explain it but CB Tricks also has a VFO or slider section that will give you more information. Tombstone

Tombstone, I have been reading about the modification called (the mod) where you don't cut anything. It just adds a board into the unit and it changes things, but I don't know anything about it. Just look up the mod on the net and it is easy to find. Board costs $65 and I guess also have to change out the channel readout maybe. Would like to know more about it before I buy it though. No cutting, extra switchs, or anything. Supposed to work with the 8719 pll.

Mine has one of those silly crystal kits installed.............. 40 up and 40 down............ I have the 1980 version that still has the rotarty clock (that STILL WORKS!) and that has the 8719 pll and the AWI and CH 9 indicators. Its has about the best receiver ive ever heard in a standard CB rig.

Sounds to me like an Expo Expander kit. If that's what it is you might have to adjust the VCO slightly to get the extras to kick in and you won't need to change the channel readout.

I saw an old Secret CB book that showed a Madison that has the clock removed and a digital UFO installed. Volume 2 April 1978 shows it on the front.

I think that the old Redco Digiscans were called "UFO's".
About 10 years ago, I picked up an almost new Madison base with it's original box. Inside was a hang tag that was on the radio explaining that President was changing it's name to Uniden. I still have it around here some place. If I find it, I'll scan & post it.

I think that all digiscans were called UFO'S. I believe that the Redco had an LED readout. The rest of the digiscans had mechanical readouts like the old car speedometers. They usually connect to the radio with ribbon cable and a small board. Getting info on them might be difficult. They're a thing of the past. Best thing is to put the 40 up and 40 down expo expander kit in. You can always put a frequency counter on the radio or build one in where the clock goes? ( never mind the "thing of the past " part), Most of us use things of the past.

Thing of the past is pretty much all we have anymore unless you want to get into the new dx stuff. Does anyone even make a base anymore? Far as I know it is just dx now.
