I'm not sure but as you suggest , the year of manufacture is probably in the serial number. At this point it's redundant anyway. By now the "newest" of the 2000's are way old enough that replacing the capacitors is a very good idea. They weren't made to last this long no matter how much mileage is on the radio. The original caps will fail sooner or later.

I had that trouble years ago with a 2000 and an Expo kit. I just touched up the VCO in the radio and that cured it. Just a guess, it could be the kit and I think some or all have trimmers for the crystals, it's been awhile. Could be something else in the radio failing or the kit. Try slightly adjusting the VCO transformer. Just guesses.

Another thought: Try cleaning the contacts in the radio's rotary tuner. Use a type of spray that won't harm plastic and has a silicone lube in it. Do the same thing to the switch for the kit??

That's great news, congratulations. I hate it when things don't work right!

I have a madison that has one of those goofy kits in it. My uncle had it installed 30 years ago or so and the 3 position switch will act up and ill lose a band.

At one time before the PLL chip jump started, the Expo kit was very popular and easiest to install. You could always replace the switch or take the switch out and run wires from the switch connections to a rotary switch mounted in the phone jack hole. You might be able to spray that switch with something that won't destroy plastic and get some more life out of it?

Oops, I forgot and took it like your radio is a 2000. I don't know if the Madison has a phone jack on the front if that's the way you go. I don't especially like drilling holes.
