I have a Mark III SSB later generation that is in great working condition. It has a strong receive, the s-meter seems to be working properly, it has plenty of volume, but the problem is the clarity of the sound coming out of the speaker. I guess the best way to try and describe it is like the - and + wires on a speaker were touching. It has a squeezed distorted, scratchy type of sound when people are talking. If I turn the rf gain back, it does tend to clear up the audio a little. I tried an external speaker and that did not help. I also swapped a couple of tubes in and out which didn't help. I have checked the caps around the audio tube, including the pinger cap, and they seem to be o.k. Is it possible there could be an alignmnet issue? Can anybody give me some help on this one, PLEASE?

5Alive,
Try new V5, V6 and V7 6BA6 IF tubes first. If they don't help, maybe the detector diode.

I'll check V5, V6, and V7 again Fixr. What's the number on the detector diode (R?)?
Thanks!

5alive,
I would replace them with new tubes. A gassy tube could cause the distortion. The detector diode is CR3 on the schematic and it is a 1N67. A 1N34A or an NTE 109 should work as a replacement.

I took my Mark III to a Tech. in a neighboring state. He replaced the 6AQ5 tube but said he really didn't hear anything wrong. As a matter of fact, he has a set of Mark IIIs and he said mine sounds like his, fine with no problems! I don't know if my ears are sharper than average or what - I still say the audio sounds like it is overloading the receiver. I'm still seeking a solution to my problem!
