i just picked up a hallicrafters cb3a, i have a few of them. this one has the meters and noise blanker control , those were optional on these radios, my other 2 dont have them and from vintage advertisements i have seen them sold as optional. the biggest thing on this radio that i have never seen before is that it has a box screwed to the outsid cover with a screen cover that houses 2 tubes, a 6al5 and a 12ax7, hallicrafters branded tubes. i havent powered the radio up yet as i am going to use a variac and bring up the power slowly. i am wondering what the 2 external tubes do, maybe a modulator? has anyone ever seen this before? jimbo

I posted before and probably forgot to click on reply. Since there's a 12AX7 in there, that's an audio tube. Back in the early days a friend had a Regency Range Gain and he had a modulator box mounted on the side of the radio. I doubt that Regency designed it, it must have been after market. I woild say that it's a modulator of some kind or even a speech compressor? This was when I was pedaling a bike and didn't know much about the hobby. With the Double Sideband, the radio puts out little wattage, they're all modulation and you don't need a power mic or modulator with them, A Hallicrafters might be a different story. If it is, you don't want to run a power mic with it. Let us know what you find out sbout it.

Glad that you found out about it. I'm sure it'll wire to the Robyn but someone with more savvy will have to tell you how to wire it to that tube.
