I use Sony MDR-7506 for contests on the ham bands. They got great reviews on eham. For DXing, or rag chew on the CB or ham, I just use the speaker.

Do you have to use an adapter to get sound in each ear?

You really should use communications headphones for ham or cb because of the frequency response of just voice. Your rado has a mono headphone output and communications phones or "cans" are wired for mono and usually have a 1/4 inch phone plug. If your radio has an 1/8 inch jack then an adapter is used. Stereo phones can be used but the frequency response is wide for music, and in stereo, so an adapter has to be used to make the headphones sound mono. Headphones are good for hearing weak stations that are difficult to hear with just the radio's speaker. I often use phones on my shortwave radios and to listen for weak ham chatter. To each his own but I prefer to oprate cb with just the speaker in the radio, with headphones I find it clumsy and un natural and it's hard for me to tell how loud that I'm talking. Someone else may have a comletly different experience. These are just my thoughts on the subject. have fun!

I used headphones when I was a teen, so I could chase DX at night and not get yelled at for being on the radio.

Using headphones really helps to hear weak signals that you might not hear otherwise. I'm getting great results with my B-17 Bomber phones and I use a great sounding set of Kenwood HS 5"s.

i use headphones when i'm listening to my scanners it saves batteries an i just plug the 1/8th inch plug into the external speaker jack an turn the volume down when i'm on the CB it helps the old ears hear clearer. ;D
