I just acquired a 623 Hygain 23 channel base. It only put out about half a watt. Where do I stick the steak knife to turn it up. I would like to open the clarifier also. Thanks, Crazy (Aspie) Bob.

There is no adjustment for AM carrier. There are load and plate tuning caps on the rear panel near the coax connector. Extending the clarifier range on this radio is wild. There are 2 resistors connected to the clarifier pot. Jump them out and you will have 15 Khz up range and an adjustable down range anywhere between 15 and 200 Khz. Obviously, that much down range makes things very touchy, so I tend to set mine conservatively. I love the 623. It's one of my all-time favorite radios. Warm audio, a really nice S-meter, and a tight receiver.

I found the caps & unscrewed them for Load & plate. I had one the once that had a toggle switch for the clarifier jump. I'll use a toggle switch, if I jump the resistors. I paid 80 bucks for it & it came with a Turner +2 desk mic. My Tug-8 D104, sounds better.
Lots of yellow nicotine on this radio. I'm sure that smoker must realize what they're doing to thier insides when they huff on the cancer sticks!

I picked up the old FT 757 Yaesu, last week. It receives, but no TX output. I traded a guy an old laptop computer for the Yaesu. DLF electronics said that I should bring it down to him in Rio Grande, NJ. He said that he can fix it. ..He fixed my FT 101EE.

I'm sure that smoker must realize what they're doing to thier insides when they huff on the cancer sticks! The 623 I have now was once owned by a smoker. The tar stains were so bad that they were actually coating the boards inside and causing frequency stability problems. I had to clean the entire insides with alcohol and flux cleaner to remove those deposits. Then I had to replace the USB and LSB carrier offset pots. The D104 does match up well to the 623. A Turner +3 also sounds good, although it might be a little more bassy. Mine used to have the SSB power mod, and it would hit an honest 25 watts on SSB. But I undid the mod as it was hitting the amplifiers too hard. It's now happy at the stock 12 watt level. There are 10 watt dropping resistors that you can change to raise or lower AM carrier. But the audio punch is best if you leave it alone at a 3 watt level. Installing a switch for the clarifier range is a good idea. On my old 623, I had a 3-way switch where I had stock range, a 3 channel drop and the "super slide" 20 channel drop. It's a good thing that Hy-Gain used a 10-turn pot for the clarifier. I'm sure that was no accident......

Krud Kutter melts nicotine. It is much faster and easier than alcohol.

Krud Kutter melts nicotine. It is much faster and easier than alcohol. But is it safe on plastics?
