A friend of mine likes to DX the AM broadcast band (receive only). I made a homemade AM broadcast band loop antenna out of about 125 feet of insulated wire wrapped around the outside of a hula-hoop with a variable air capacitor for tuning. I made the video below for my friend Marc, but DX'ers in general might enjoy making one as well. It works quite well on the AM broadcast band. I can find a dead spot on the band, bring my antenna near any AM broadcast band radio, tune the variable capacitor to the frequency, and a station will jump out of the noise. By rotating the antenna I can often choose to listen to two completely different stations on the same frequency by placing one of them in the loops rather deep null spot.
