Picked up a Sonar Model G and was wondering if anyone has run one of these and if so was it any good? It almost looks like the Model H with a meter and an up-firing speaker. There's not much discussion about it on the net except for cbtricks.
I was a little confused by the "12V" sticker on the back until I read that was the DC vibrator voltage this radio was optioned with. You had a choice of 6, 12 or 32VDC only models. This one came with the 12V cord that I'll convert to run the radio on 120 VAC.
Due to the multiple paper caps and hefty Udur-de-Basement maybe I should fire this one up in the driveway first, hehe sizzle-POP!

With capacitors that old you'd be better off using a Variac to bring the radios power up SLOWLY, or just play it safe and start replacing them now to avoid problems that could be days away. I'd play it safe and replace them all. www.oldtuberadio.com/sonar-model-g/Doesn't really give a lot of info at all, but it shows the radio.

Got the Sonar Model G operational with great audio reports using an amplified D104.
The internal speaker is nasty but using the external speaker jack the sound is excellent, hi-fi even. Found out that a previous owner rigged a small switch on the front to switch between internal and external speakers. Only problem is when I try to transmit using the external speaker, there is a loud feedback. I'll have to look to see if they just wired it up incorrectly or they were trying to do some audio mod. They have wires going to the base of a tube and the relay??? weird.
Since it's works for now, are there any audio benefits to keeping those "paper" capacitors in there?

Some came with a 6V sticker, because of some Vehilcles (like the VW) still had 6 volt systems.
