Which means if you are on relatively flat terrain or are at the top of a hill with nothing in between you and the horizon, you can expect pretty good distances. The thing is that MURS was set up to use 2 watt radios, but most people I've run across are using modified 2 meter gear with power outputs which far exceed FCC limits for the band (not much different than on CB right?). So with a 50 watt 2 meter radio into a 10 element beam, it should be no surprise to be able to talk 100 miles or more, and when the tropo ducts start occurring, you might be working several states over.

Ya, I looked at MURS when it came out. Basically 2 meters limited to 2 watts, but with no antenna limitation (if I recall correctly). I played around with it but there was really no activity on it.

Yea I played around with it a few years back. There was still some grandfathered business band activity on the top 2 channels, but not much in the way of hobby-type talking, except for a couple of guys with hopped up 2 meter rigs (who I suspect were also hams, which makes little sense to be there when you have the whole 2 meter band ). When MURS first came out, the FCC rated output power as ERP out of the antenna, which means that you had to calculate your antenna gain, minus your feedline loss and adjust your transmitter power for 2 watts ERP. As can be expected, there was a big pushback over the difficulty of having to do this by people who were not expected to be technical wizards. So the FCC relented and simply rated the power at 2 watts out of the radio. Radio Shack carried MURS radios for a short time, but those were quickly discontinued like so many other of Radio Shacks better (actual RADIO) products.

I also picked up a GMRS license, since they allowed repeaters and I thought it might be a neat way to keep in tough with the family around town and on trips, but on my area there are some weird people jamming the frequencies.

GMRS users are a strange bunch. They are not normally the socializing types, at least not in my area. I guess that's probably a learned behavior in response to all of the blister-pack radios being sold at Wal-Mart which don't emphasize the need for a license, and all of these people trampling all over local user group frequencies. There are repeaters out there but they are usually maintained by the associated user's group. Having a GMRS license alone may not be enough to grant you access. They may very well suggest (insist!) that you join their group ($$$$) before you're welcomed into the fold. And it's not an unreasonable request. SOMEONE has to maintain those repeaters, and they aren't cheap.

I know. I was going to set up a repeater for the family since I'm on the high point around here, but when I ran into the mess I just lost interest. We do have one good group here with a repeater, but they also get jammed so I just let it pass. Maybe the jammers will lose interest one day and the frequencies will be useable.

I never heard anyone on GMRS, I have a license what for I do not know, but the only time I ever talked to anyone was around INDIANAPOLIS REACT had a repeater but if you were not from around there you had to send an email to them to be allowed on it, it was good though it covered INDI and all the way to COLUMBUS INDIANA maybe 40 miles. They have one in LOUISVILLE, but same REACT but the antenna is at the guys house and limited range. I could not reach it at 27 miles NORTH , but could reach one at 20 miles on the ham band near GMRS.band. I do not mess with it anymore, do not like to listen to noise and dead air. DOCTOR ;D

That's how most people seem to be getting on MURS as the amount an availability of MURS gear seems to be very thin.

CB was a main stream activity in the 1970s. I think part of the reason some of the would be male jammers and malcontents behaved themselves back then was the presence of women on the air. Some of those lonely male jammer types were more likely to behave if there was an attractive sounding female on the air he was trying to impress. Several years ago there was a documentary on how a group of young male elephants in Africa were attacking and killing other animals for no apparent reason. It turned out there were no females in the group. Once female elephants were introduced in to the population the young males started behaving normally. CB is largely devoid of single attractive women now, but that was not the case in 1976. CB radio was the cell phone of the day, and were I lived there were plenty of women and young girls on the air. Think about it. How many times have you seen one of your beer drinking hell raising party hard buddies "settle down" to start a family with his new girlfriend or wife. Did you "settle down" and start acting more responsibly once you had a family? Most of the CB jammers on the air today are lonely males. Night Ranger

You know one of the biggest malcontents up this way, and he's a pretty lonely single guy in his 40's. That's pretty much true across the board. Most responsible, employed, family guys do not have the disposition to be agitators, unless they're drunk, and that's not an every day occurrence usually. Also somewhat agree with the premise that chasing women gave them something to do rather than jamming people. Although I would have to disagree about the amount of "attractive" women on the radio back then. Around here many sounded sweet, but ended up looking like truck drivers, or sumo wrestlers in training. There were a few exceptions, but that's exactly what they were. And predictably enough, those few exceptions were VERY picky (because they could be) of which guys they chose to associate with on a more personal level. I think a bigger part was that 40 years ago, people had far more respect for themselves and other people, and the idea of trashing another's enjoyment just didn't occur to that many people. It's a whole different mindset today. We seem to be raising a whole generation of people with "self-esteem issues".

Where I grew up in Rock Hill, South Carolina there some very nice looking babes on the CB back in 1975 and 1976, and I'm picky. Some of them I went to school with, and some I met off the CB. Unfortunately as the fad faded the young attractive females went with it for the most part. By the mid 1980s the good looking girls were gone. Teenage and twenty year old girls on the CB in 1976 that I remember as being down right hot were; On a scale of 1 to 10; A) Heartbreaker - and she was too! - 10 B) Buttercup - Nice looking and nice to know - 9 C) Lovebug - 9 D) Sunflower - 8+ E) Wildflower - major babe! - 9 F) Dodi - 8 G) Lucky Charm - 8 7) Little Lover - 8 face with a 10 body I had heard "Brown Sugar" was good looking, but I never met her. Her voice was super sexy, and her cousin won Miss South Carolina. There was another young girl on the CB who was nice looking as well, but her mother was...well...b*tchy and loud mouthed. Her mother was so loud mouthed and b*tchy I never tried to meet the daughter just because I did not want to deal with the mother. Later the mother toned down and became a much nicer person after some bad things happened to her, and the CB'ers came together to help her out. Many years later the mother tried to set me up with her daughter, but by then the daughter had widened quite a bit and she already had two kids from a failed marriage. I declined the invitation. The last time I met a good looking girl off the CB was 1996. It was fluke. She got on the CB to talk to her husband and a few friends, She was a very nice looking brunette. If her husband had not put up a base radio I doubt she would have ever considered it. Night Ranger

I wish I had some pic's from back in the day, but I didn't own a camera back then, so any pics were taken by people other than me, and they are most likely lost in the dusty regions of someone's attic by now, if not disposed of. I did managed to remember a couple more attractive girls from my area back in the day. Add to the list: Black Magic - A very sweet Irish girl. Goldilocks - a stunning "big hair" blond. My list spans about a 10 year period, so most of them were not on the same channels during the same time period. So we were definitely "thin" on cute girls to flirt with.

I guess I was lucky in that regard. In 1976 channel 13 was the wide open teen and twenty something channel. There were alot of young people on it, and there were almost as many females as males. I don't remember hearing any fighting on that channel either. Everybody pretty much got along. Friday and Saturday nights were alive with teenage and twenty somethings cruising up and down the main drag strip. I made one cassette recording of channel 13 in 1976, but unfortunately the cassette tape broke and I threw it away. I would love to have that recording now. The big adult channel was channel 7. They fought and dead keyed each other on a regular basis. I stayed off the channel for the most part. Channel 8, 14, 15, 18, and channel 1 had some regulars as well. There was a smaller river boat crowd on channel 23 too. Night Ranger

She's a looker for sure, and certainly atypical for the typical female in my area. Same here. Out of all the girls I remember meeting (and we did a bunch of coffee breaks in the area) maybe two dozen girls really stood out as cute. And there were a lot on the radio.

Even if she would have said no it would have been worth asking. I had some girlfriends in my youth that were just as pretty as Buttercup or even prettier for one or two of them, but in the long run they turned out not to be as nice as Buttercup. The other girls personality soured as they got older, but Buttercup is just as nice and warm and friendly as ever. She is married with two kids now although somewhat plumper. Night Ranger

But, truth be told, so have I.........

She's a looker for sure, and certainly atypical for the typical female in my area. It was similar around my way, although we also had rival teen channels who would often war with each other. And that was usually caused by a sharp difference in socio-economic status. The adult battles usually involved one or more drunks.

Now I'm a 33 or 34 inch waist and I weigh about 166 lbs. If I try really hard I can get back to a 32 inch waist and about 153 pounds, but I have to stay away from all my favorite fast food restaurants and only eat things like fruits, vegetables, and no major greasy meaty stuff. It sucks. Night Ranger

I weighed 165 Lbs when I graduated high school (and I was thin as a rail at 6' tall), and I'm now tipping the scales at 200 Lbs, so that averages out to a gain of 1 Lb per year ;-). Funny how this thread went from MURS to attractive CB females, to average weight.........
