How hard would it be to add a clarifier to a Connex XD-3400HP? For some reason on the upper bands I'm always off frequency. Or is this just a problem with the radio/antenna setup?

KATO808 #DeepInTheHeartOfTexas The radio is PLL controlled so there shouldn't be a reason why one band is off frequency over another unless one of the mixer crystals are misaligned. CBtricks does not have the schematic for your particular model radio, but if it uses the same mother board as the 4300, it generates all of the bands through diode matrices and not separate band mixer crystals, so that should not be the issue here. Are you sure the radio is really "off frequency" (as in you put it on a counter and saw the frequency error), or is this based on someone's subjective "radio check"? Many times the uninformed will mistaken the fuzzy sound of distortion with being "off frequency". You may have a completely different issue.

All of the upper band contacts tell me I'm garbled and off frequency. I'm going to plug in a counter as soon as I aquire on and double check. But I don't see the point in investing in a frequency counter unless I can add a way to adjust frequency.

KATO808 #DeepInTheHeartOfTexas Even if you borrow a counter from a friend, that will tell you if you are truly off frequency, or whether the "garble" is the result of increasing SWR or some other out of tune condition that is only there on the upper bands. My experience has shown me that the average guy can't tell the difference between "off-frequency" and some other distortion, so they may have led you down the wrong path.

If it sounds bad, there's a reason.
Does the receiver's audio make the other stations also sound "off frequency" to you as well?
If not, this suggests that the radio's frequency synthesizer is not off frequency. It controls receive frequency and transmit frequency, both.
Have you checked the antenna's SWR on the upper band? If it's high, this could be the root of what they are hearing. Some radios will misbehave when transmitting into a high SWR.
Other issues with the radio's internal alignment could cause this, as well. Only takes one internal adjustment to force the radio's transmit off frequency. Trouble with this theory is that the other bands should be affected the same way. And your symptom appears only on some of them.
There is more than one way to make a radio sound "off frequency". Until it is checked for proper carrier frequency on transmit, I would be skeptical of choosing a technical reason for the audio distortion they are hearing. There is a fair chance that this distortion has another cause.

If the rig is based off of the Ranger 3600 series AM/FM board here is some additional adjustment info on a similar rig: www.cbtricks.com/radios/galaxy/dx33hp/dx33hp_adj.htmor the main page: www.cbtricks.com/radios/galaxy/dx33hp/index.htmI've found that just because CB Tricks doesn't list your exact model radio some others may cross. Like Galaxy, RCI, Connex, Ranger, Voyager, Superstar ect...It' takes a little time to scroll thru them though. You would need to visually confirm that the boards are the same. They usually have a part number such as "EPT360014B" silk screened on the board somewhere.

CB Tricks has only pictures of his model. Uses the EPT3600-15 board, the one that uses the TDA2003 speaker amp chip.
Just getting to the root of the symptom would be a good start.
If you have a way to listen to your own transmit signal with another radio this is a very good place to start. Relying on what others tell you about your transmit signal is famously unreliable. A spare radio with a headphone plugged into the external-speaker jack might reveal a lot.

As I suspected, there is not a different set of mixer crystals for upper and lower bands (Everything is done via the PLL through diode matrix switching), there should not be a difference in frequency between any of the bands. I would say that there is a distortion issue that is probably related to higher SWR or transmitter tuning.

I am curious....where did you buy the radio? New or used? If it's used, do you know where it was purchased originally? There are a couple of "shops" in Texas that I know of that will chop the hell out of a radio under the name of "WACKPACK" and "Supertune" . They remove audio limiters and such,(A HUGE NO NO with this particular rig) while telling the purchaser that the radio will "Squash" the competition...2 Dealers who do such nonsense are Radioactive Radios and Clay's Radio Shop....I wouldn't buy anything from either of them....I've seen their "work" first hand and have repaired several "victims" of their handi-work.

Hmmm. And all this time I thought the name was "Radio-Whack-Tive Radios".

I purchased the radio new from cyborNet CB shop in Robstown Texas. The only thing done to the radio is a peek and tune.

Thanks for the info. I'm gonna trade trucks with my buddy next week and see how it sounds on the upper bands. Thank you for the idea

My SWR is high on the upper bands...not excessive its around 1.5-1.8 I'll try retuning to the upper bands.

Thanks so much for the info. I'll visually inspect board tomorrow and see if I can tell the markings..
