Spent today going through my "New" 1967 Amphenol 725. It needed a few things done to it to get "up to snuff". Although it's been on the air already (and heard in PA , there were a few nagging issues.
Dirty relays...not letting the recieve return after unkeying, Dirty controls..lots of static when adjusting volume, channel selector etc..4 sets of VERY off frequency crystals..no internal speaker..(torn paper cone) and a host of cold solder joints..Spent 2 hours redoing a bunch of the cold solder joints (several were on the relay socket, mike wiring and in the IF section), Thank god for SAMS books! cleaned and re-seated the relay..it plugs in..interesting! It has it's own compartment away from the main chassis. Cleaned & Lubed all the switches..Aligned the transmitter-it does a whopping 2&3/4 watts, backed it down to 2. It doesn't "swing" but about a quarter of a watt forward,(RMS) but seems to have plenty of modulation according to several radio checks plus one thoughtfully provided by the wife while I was mobile. It sounds really good on the air for a 50 year-old radio. The only issue I have now is having to return the borrowed set of Channel 13 crystals to their owner..I do have a set of ch.12s that will remain in the radio, but I need to find a set for 27.115. I thought I had some....NOT! Standard Radio Shack Walkie-Talkie crstals...
Replaced the internal speaker from a junk TRC-430 carcass in the junk box..fit perfectly so now its got a speaker. This rig weighs a ton! ALL METAL COSTRUCTION.
My work bench isn't normally this messy..
