I probably overspent by $20. But they were NIB with original batteries. These were the radios that started it all. El cheapo 4 transistor jobs with the range of like 1 block. But around 1976, when I thought you could only talk to someone with the other radio, I spoke to a CBer (I had never heard of CB) who was obviously close. Well, I might as well have spoken to someone in outer space. I was hooked. www.ebay.com/itm/301140649629?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

Back then "rare DX" was talking a 1/2 a mile away. Those were some fun times.....

Same here. I was using a 1 channel realistic walkie talkie talking to my friend in eyes sight when all of a sudden a guy says hello. He told me I was on channel 11 on the cb. Later on I asked my dad what was a cb. Christmas came and I had a Channel Master mobile with an RCA power supply and a pea shooter antenna. I was hooked. If you are happy with the price that is all that matters. Nice shelf eye candy.

The funny thing is that I never talked to that person ever again (not realizing that I had to be close). But I tried and tried for what seems to be forever.

I've had a couple of those type of contacts back in my 100 mW days. While I couldn't be heard by others with walkie-talkies, for more than about 1/4 to 1/2 mile, those who had "real" radios and base or mobile antennas could hear me up to a mile or more away. That's about the time I started experimenting with random length long wire antennas and attaching them to my 100 mW radio to extend that range.

I have a very vivid memory of climbing a tree in our front yard, single channel (channel 14) walkie talkie in hand, I was probably about 9 or 10 at the time. I was trying to make contact with anyone on Rt. 100 about 1/4 mile away, but no go. I remember TONS of skip though and wondering why I couldn't get a come back. I eventually upgraded to a 2 watt, 3 channel MacDonalds Instrument walkie talkie from Kmart then ran to Radio Shack for channel 19 crystals. That did the trick!

I miss the $5 radio shack crystals. And the free battery with my battery card.

I miss the $5 radio shack crystals. And the free battery with my battery card. I used to get my walkie-talkie crystals at both Radio Shack and the Lafayette store. A pair of crystals was about 50 cents cheaper at Lafayette, and they had a better selection. By the time I finally earned enough to buy a full 23 channel radio, I had a crystal collection that included channels 1,3,7,11,14,19 and 21.

I had a walkie talkie it was blue and a fake chrome front end, I believe it was on channel 7, I talked to a friend one time but he lived about 1/2 mile away , HE HAD TO BE ON HIS BIKE WITHIN EYE RANGE no contact to far, but it sure would bring in the skip, bought a GONSET 3 chnl then and a wire antenna who knows what the swr was talked 15 miles and as you guys hooked. I guess I was not the only one who tried a wire contraption antenna.

I guess I was not the only one who tried a wire contraption antenna. I think the wire antenna experimenting was a right of passage for those of us who slugged our way up from walkie-talkies. I know a couple of my friends who went this route. Despite not understanding anything about resonant lengths, SWR or impedance, somehow those random length wires seemed to help "get out" a little better.

OK. I got them. Well, as usual, they were not NIB. The were very good, but not new in box. Still, worth the money. I fired one up, and static. I keyed up on my CB and poor receive.
So looked at my schematic. About 8 or so carbon resistors, 2 electrolytic caps. Let me measure. All resistors were out. Caps were out. I had spares, so in typical Vinnie fashion, did a fill rebuild. New film resistors and caps.
Now tuning was a b*tch. My generator was drifting, and I could not read the speaker voltage on my analog meter. So I decided to inject a 1 KHz tone into my CB and use a DMM. Success! I was able to tune the only slug to a peak tone on the DMM.
Took it outside, and Skipland!!!!!!!!!! Just as I remember it !!!!!!!!!
