Just picked up a beautiful top of the line Royce 642. Opened the clarifier. In the process of changing out the electrolytic caps. This radio was dead on frequency. Some numbskull removed Q16 the transistor for speech compressor. Replaced it. This radio is a excellent performer. Pictures to come.

One of them has been on nearly 24/7 as the Spew Radio receiver. The nicer of the 2 is part of my classic radio collection.

This radio came with the owners manual. Had a note inside never used. Not a scratch on the sides. Super stable radio. No warm up time. I prefer it over my like new Cobra 2000 I sold a few years back. Carefully cleaned it . Monster cleaner is excellent for the plastic faces. Opened the clarifier. Tried the frequency mod on line for this iCCI 3001 PLL. It did not work. Secret CB is wrong on this. Attachment DeletedAttachment DeletedAttachment Deleted Picked up this gem for $80.00 Someone had pulled the transistor Q16 for the compressor circuit. I looked it up had one in stock and replaced it.

Nice radio for sure! I've got one in minty condition as well. Just like the look of them.
For some reason mine doesn't want to play well with my comp box, so I'll have to see what is causing that issue someday (spurs?)

I'll have confirm it on the bench, but I recall when hooked up to the X-Force 4 pill, the 642 "fuzzed out" when transmitting like an RF feed back issue.

I've seen cases where high power RF feedback can actually work its way back inside a radio and cause the PLL to FM, which sounds "fuzzy" on AM (But great on FM!)

For CRR, I got the 642 to co-operate with the box by adding fantastic ferrites on the external speaker wire, mic cable and coax.
I forgot that it has a down firing speaker on the bottom that helps give the front of the radio that '70's stereo receiver look.
Sandbagger, I checked the Royce base I got from Grumpy and it is indeed another 642. I'll have to cue it up sometime and see what's up with it.

The radio works fine on AM,but has severe distortion on SSB. Grumpy didn't want me to track it down further so I left it alone. I suspect there's a problem with the balanced modulator chip. It's nothing as simple as final bias. It's far worse. It's downright ugly on the scope.

Wow love the 642, looks like new! Had no idea Royce made a base station like that. A good friend of mine that got into 11 meters same time (1972) I did ran a nice AM Royce base. Really had no idea they made anything like that. For what ever reason can't find the real nice radios like that. Have not bought a radio on ebay for 10 years cause I was tired of getting screwed. My tower is coming down this weekend, have the manpower and looks like mother nature is gonna work with me. Should have the Y-Quad up by Sunday afternoon. Hope to be checking in on the classic net Wednesday night soon. Once again great find, beautiful find!

Good look with the beam!
I feel lucky I have 2 of these gems. Just ordered all the caps for them. And the mint mark IV receiver that was in the original box packing at Goodwill!

You are killing me, a Mark IV receiver in good shape in the box at Goodwill WOW!!!!!!!!!!! I never find that stuff, never! I have a crew coming tomorrow morning to help me drop the tower. Have wanted to get it down for a while but could not get my manpower together when mother nature was not raging! Have permission from the wife to leave it down this week to change out the antennas, and the weather doesn't look real good all week so when it breaks close the weekend tower with the new beam will be ready to go up. Take care everyone.......

A friend of mine told me about it. I missed out on it at Good Will. Then I saw this radio on ebay. Asked the guy if this was the Good Will radio. He said it was. So I asked him why he was selling it. He was having some issues and was selling it. I got him down to almost the Good Will price. Awesome condition. Looks like it only had a few hours on

This royce has a very rare PLL. But it's amazing what you can find online. I found a guy in Austria that makes a drop in modern PLL unit 40 down 40 up 5 & 10 KC jump. All with just grounding a separate wire for each function.
Pictures will follow soon.

I have also recently acquired a Royce 1-642 in near mint cndx. Radio is all stock which is really nice, came with original box and all the original paper work still wrapped up.
I know Sam’s facts never had a manual for this radio, but was a service manual ever made? Who has parts list and service manual for this fine radio?
I have found some information stating the 1-639 maybe the mobile version but I have not been able to confirm this.

I have a bench note here that says the Pace model 8193 is close enough to use Sams volume CB-280 for this model.
The note is dated a couple of years back. Probably haven't seen that model even once since then.

CBTricks doesn't have a schematic for the Pace radio, but it DOES have one for the SBE LCMS-4, which is also the same board as the Royce.
