That was a pretty good deal if you are looking for an 800 watt sweep tube CB amp. It will dead key 400 watts easy with 4 watts drive. Of course if you have a Dosy Test Center hooked up after it then it will do 2000 watts! ; ) Night Ranger

Dentron must have had a pretty good run with the GLA-1000, although you did have to work the stock amp over a bit to really get it to play decently. Main problem was that they'd arc over to the case and either take out the plate choke or the transformer. They eventually solved that issue, but I used to yank the guts out and put it in my own homebrew case and replace the doorknob cap for friends. Today, our version of sweep-tube amplification would be cheap power MOSFET's. Man, if I was an unscrupulous, greedy piece of crap that some folks are, what I'd do is make a peak-reading DOSY meter that also contained a crap pile of bright LED's and some type of audio chip that would say Homer Simpson's "DOH!" when it pegged the meter. It would be called the "DOSY DOH!" of course . The really hilarious thing would be that a lot of those folks would attribute better accuracy because of the additional "circuitry." . MSRP would be $500.00, of course! UPDATE: Doing some brainstorming on this new "meter," and I came up with the "Audio Detection" mode, which would be user switchable, in or out. When it was on, it would play a constant tone, and at low power it would be low in volume. As power increased, the tone would increase in volume, and then it would play Homer's "DOH!" when the meter pegged, which would be almost always on each scale . The literature would say that audio mode allows you to monitor power output without having to actually look at the thing, and that would be really, really helpful for testing your Po while driving . In SWR mode, the tone would be louder with higher levels of SWR, and it would drop the volume of the tone the closer you get to a 1:1 reading. The really funny thing here is that it might actually be very helpful to blind operators . Oh, I forgot something...It would also flash all the bright LED's like mad when Homer said DOH! . I guess you could also add a pulser to the thing that would allow you to tune up your linear amplifier correctly. The more I think about this, the more I think an "audio only" meter might actually be useful. . 73, Randy AB5NI

I updated my original post...check that out . Also, what we need to do is form the "Auuuudiiiooo Meter" company, pool our resources, and use the profits for DXpeditions to Oahu, Southern France, and Monaco . NR -- you HAVE to make that video! OTOH, the more you fill people in on what kind of POS that thing is, the less likely we'll be able to sell them our "NEW AND IMPROVED!!!" DOSY meter . 73, Randy AB5NI

And it's full of 6LQ6 tubes which have gotten ridiculously expensive. A conversion to 31LQ6's is easy when you have multiples of 4 tubes. But this one used either 9 or 10 depending on which version you have.

But no matter how you pronounce it, it's still the most misleading measurement device out there.
