Just acquired a swell old Lafayette Telstat 1023 for 5 bucks at a VFW Garage sale...Old radio fired right up when I got it home...after a bit of cleanup, a wellness check on the caps, relays, switches and a slight tune-up. Works like a new radio. The knobs are spun aluminum..this thing is a tank!...If you have a cool old "three knobber" post a pic!....

Wish I still had my Lafayette HE-15. That was my first 'big boy' CB radio after having the Archer Space Patrol base station and some walkie talkies.

I'm fortunate to still have my first base radio, the Lafayette Comstat 25. It was not my first "real" CB radio (that was a Pace 223 mobile), but it was my first base radio. It's 50 years old this year........ Still talking great.

Yea, I have some regrets for liquidating much of my old collection, including a nearly mint condition Hy-Gain 623....

Just acquired a swell old Lafayette Telstat 1023 for 5 bucks at a VFW Garage sale... ...If you have a cool old "three knobber" post a pic!.... When I was a driving instructor back in '89-'91 you can imagine I drove up and down every street in the valley. If you think yard sales are only held on the weekends, think again. I picked up a few $5-$20 radios that were pretty nice rigs. I found a little red smoker brand new sitting at the curb in a posh neighborhood. It needed only hook on the lid. Then I found a canoe that once belonged to the City of Los Angeles when they closed the rental dock at Hanson Dam forever. This lady said her brother and 2 of his friends, who grew up on the lake at the boat and fishing docks, got up in arms and sneaked down one night and just swiped one from the pile set to be junked. All fiberglass hull with wood trim and seats. All the wood is weathered beyond belief and will be used only as a pattern to rebuild the new wood. I'm sure the statute of limitations are pretty well up on this 40 year old caper. besides, back then, there were no serial numbers I do have a 3 knobber to share. This one came to me 3 years ago from a CB shop in Webbers Falls OK. I couldn't pass up the $50 gem. NOS, in the box, wrapped in plastic, all the cards and pamphlets. License application. Talk about a 3 knobber, that's all there is! no switches for bells and whistles. Just on/off-volume; squelch; channel selector... Talk about "Little Billy's first radio"! Yes, it's the famous Cobra 85. At least it has a nice large meter to watch. In fact it's kinda an inside joke (inside my head) but I never had a base station... ever... so I had to get this one when I saw it. My next move was to get a Serio 827. Good match yeah? lol I since bought an RCI-2980 to power the Serio properly. The little Cobra was doing 3w-6w. after a little tinkering we're doing 6w-16w. After all the things I've read about modulation, I'll back off the dead key to 4w when I get a chance. I think this radio is too old to have a limiter, but I'll check into that too. I'm sure there are plenty of schematics for this old rig. I have a Realistic desk power mic that I've been told was made by turner. This will sit on my garage bench so I can stay chatting with friends when I work on my cars in the evening. An "A/B" switch in the mast coax should solve the problem.

The Cobra 85 is a little sparse in the feature area but it's a Toshiba chassis that is a pretty decent performer. Yes, there is a modulation limiter in it, and it's not adjustable. But I don't recommend clipping it, as it will make the radio splatter. The audio amp/modulator should be good for 16 or so watts peak, so I wouldn't set the dead key over 4 watts, or you will lose 100% 4:1 peak modulation capability.

I have one also in my collection of vintage Lafayette CB radios... Do you have an owners manual or any other info on this radio? Attachment Deleted
