Working on saving for a new radio and wanted to get everyone's opinion. Looking at these radios. Please let me know what you think, pros and cons of them.
A--Galaxy DX 959B
B--Stryker SR-955HPC 10 meter (plan on doing the mod to use as 11 meter also)
FYI--Some time this summer I will be going for my Ham License.
Thanks for your help. 278 Wrench

Just my 2 cents worth...They are both great radios, but if you are going for your Ham licence, the Stryker is the obvious choice..As a new ham, you will have voice priveleges on 10 meters on upper sideband from 28.385 to 28.585. The Stryker will have no problems covering that (plus 11 meters), whereas the Galaxy 959B won't make it up there without extensive modifications...Doc (kd0bls)

Yes the Stryker costs more than twice as much. It's way more stable in SSB mode. Killer clear AM audio or "Claudio". Plenty of noise toyz + many Pretty Christmas lights to look at. Harder to explain to your wife "why" you need it. Try the "Im studying for my amatuer radio test" route and see if that flys.

Oh yeah, he's got the bug alright. And he told us he was hanging up the mic early last night because of some belated Mothers Day obligations. That was SMOOTH. All the while he was doin' a little bargaining for a new Stryker with the old Johson. VERY nicely done, Wrench. You actually had us fooled. Nothin' amateur about that move!

Lol, your right, I do have the bug. But I think you might have me confused with someone else. I never talked about hanging up the mic or Mothers Day stuff. I have no plans on that. I plan on keeping the Johnson 250 and working on the crystals. Just waiting to get with Skeeter for the crystals he has. And I just picked up a Realistic TSC-55. Got it up and running Wed. night during the round up.

... he told us he was hanging up the mic early last night because of some belated Mothers Day obligations... That was me. I popped in for a bit, mentioned a get-together/coffee break, then bailed to "go pay attention to the wife". Which worked in my favor quite well, if you know what I mean.

My bad MonkeyMan. I had a hard time picking each of you out of the crowd this week. In that case you need to share the proper use of the Johnson to get the maximum gain, so to speak. And Wrench, I'm glad to hear you recognize that you have a problem. Admitting it to yourself is the first step to getting...
MORE RADIOS!
And I might as well ask here; where are you planning to go for ARRL classes? Anything closer than Nazareth this summer? My son is on the fence. I'd like to push him over.

Hi, My name is Wrench (I mean John) and I have a problem. It's been 14 min since my last radio transmission. (LOL) Yes, some time this summer I plan on getting my license this summer. Not sure if I am going to take classes or just study off the web. Haven't looked into it yet.

Hey, think twice about about that 955 Styker. My second one went down the other night for no apparent reason. Lost transmit and the receive went down a bit. I'm sending this one back for warranty consideration since the factory seal is still intact. I'd be pissed if this was my only radio Those MOSFET finals are just not cutting the mustard in an AM base station environment...even with external cooling. Now my older Stryker 497s are holding up very well, but they have a venerable 2sc2290 transistor final and are AM/FM only. No SSB in those.

I really wish someone (other than china) would make a line of reliable bipolar replacements for the transistors we all knew and loved.

I'm thinking we are in a mosfit world now. We have to figure out how not to blow them up. Maybe use a car battery for power instead of the converter. Not sure if that would work. All I know is that I have the 980 in my truck and as a base. The truck is running with no issues, the base station, I have gone thru 2 radio's. I am on my 3rd base radio in less than 6 months. But still on the original radio in the truck.
In the words of Madonna: I'm a mosift boy living in a mosfit world. LOL

I have both and get great reports on both. I prefer the 959 cause it responds well to a power mic and it looks more traditionally like the cbs I've come to love. In regards to ham use.....who cares. Hahaha just kidding, calm down. I happen to know a few hams and can genuinely say there fun to kick! Hahaha sorry just kidding. Really i was studying for my tech ticket but fell asleep! Seriously though good luck with your ham licsense,i am almost ready to take the arrl test now. Amazing how much tech stuff you need to know. 321
