Well I am an Old School CB Radio Operator & a Ham Radio Operator as well.I started in CB Radio at age 5 in 1965 & loved talking with folks all over the place both locally & far away.I recall talking with many of them sometimes daily & we actually had conversations about life & things we did in our daily lives.Today it is RARE that I ever hear that on the CB.All I hear is everyone keying on everyone else showing how big their signal is or idiots with noise toys & pure garbage.I think all of the BS on the CB is why I got interested in Ham Radio along with being able to work stations all over the world 24/7 365.I am a DX Chaser most of the time because I like working other countries but I also like a good Rag Chew & there is very little of that on the CB these days. The CB airways sound more like a Riot or a Tarzan Movie which is a shame & a disgrace. We are suppose to be an advanced society in most of the world & listening to the CB Radio would never reflect that.Yes some frequencies on Ham Radio are that way as well but for the most part it is not like that at all. What happened to civilized conversation & common sense on the CB Radio? Who is responsible for it becoming the mad house that it is today when in the 60's,70's,& 80's people actually were civil & talked & communicated in a civil manner? I don't blame people who got out of CB because it became almost impossible to communicate & the language used has become beyond pathetic.Seems some guys think that every female voice that comes on the air are there because they love being talked dirty to.I don't allow my wife on the CB any more because she could not hold a conversation even with me without somebody coming on the air with their filthy mouth cussing & being a total A--hole. It appears we as a society are in a decline because everything is out of wack & few seem too even care.I use my CB for chatting with a few locals & then I turn it OFF because it is far from fun or enjoyable these days.I own over (70) CB's Today because I collect them but I will never use most of them because of the reasons stated above.I never understood Noise Toys,Echo Microphones,Reverb,& Roger Beeps? When I started the hobby everyone wanted nice loud clear transmit audio & no noise.Today some think the more noise they have the better they sound. In some cases that may be true so that it covers their filthy comments. What it does is draws attention to them & I think many want that attention because they don't get it at home. CB will never see the Boom that it once did & it's not because of cell phones but because of Morons & Adult Children who care only about themselves & their own selfish stupidity.CB is like the rest of the world,it's gone to hell in a hand basket & channel 6 is the biggest toilet channel of them all & one I never stop on these days. SIX-SHOOTER Well, Like I said in another thread, the behavior (or lack thereof) of any given CB group is location dependent. Some areas have nothing but radio Jackwagons. Other have groups of civilized people still doing it up like it was 1976. Some have a mixture of the two, separated by channels. And still other areas have no one (or very few) at all. That being said, the actions of those on CB radio (and ham radio as well to an extent) does mirror the morality and decorum of society in general. I'm sad to say that both have been on a steady decline for many years. If you think people behave badly over CB radio, you should read some of the crap that people post on the internet. People are slowly forgetting how to be civil with others. A shame for sure....

Sixshooter- I know this post is a few weeks old, but I just read it. About 3 years ago I was working on an old CB radio and put up an 11 meter antenna so I could talk to my nephew. I have had radios hooked up off and on for years moving from one place to another, and usually hooked up a CB also. Sometimes I would transmit a little, but like you, usually did not find people I wanted to talk to for long. This time I ran across a few guys that had been in radio since the 70's like me, and we began to have great conversations. It has become a regular thing now,(not every night, but a few times a week). Recently I had surgery and was off work for 6 weeks and was on the CB everyday, and those guys started getting on about everyday also. Then more and more people started joining us, saying that they had been hearing us on the air and liked the kind of conversations we were having. So, what we realized is that there seems to be more people out there listening (even if it is intermittently as I had been doing) than most are aware of. All it really took to attract a group of decent people to the CB band, was some decent people talking. Our group has grown to sometimes having 15 to 20 on at a time. I know this will be area dependent, but 5 years ago if someone had told me that there would be this kind of activity here, I would have thought they were nuts. 73 Whitey

It only takes a handful of decent people to get on and start having 70's style CB fun, and the next thing you know, you'll have all sorts of people coming out of the woodwork, who want to get in on the fun. That's how it happened for my group down here on channel 13. Like in the movie, Field of Dreams, "If you build it, they will come".

Well our field has not drawn in many players but most of us are in a rural area.We pretty much have the same group of folks & some are pretty much every night & some are just every now & then. The best part to me is how everyone gets along & there are ZERO noise toys, roger beeps,or even an echo microphone 99% of the time. It's a laid back group who just wants to chat & have a good time.A couple have not been on in 8 or 10 months but one of those has some medical issues & was in the middle of putting up a crank up tower & an Old School 5 element Long John when his back started giving him serious issues. He has the concrete poured & the antenna partially mounted & that's where he is sitting util his back gets better. He does not have the rotor & a few other items ready but he just has bigger fish right now in the fryer. There was so much skip today & tonight that I guess I was the only one that got on even for a few minutes. We are far enough apart that most of us can't hear each other when the skip is rolling even a little bit.As most of you know Channel 28 is a Busy Channel when the band is open & that's where we hang out.If there were noise toys I would NOT hang out there at all.I HATE that unneeded & unwanted crap. The CB is for Communications NOT excessive noise & childish games. But, we also have one channel, an AM channel, that is the type you are talking about. And really only about 3 of those guys are the real foul mouths. But those 3 seem to stay there and not come up to where we are. This probably has a lot to do with our group being on side band. For some reason AM and SSB seem to attract 2 different crowds of people. I guess that is the way it always has been. 73 Whitey.

I do just a little SSB on the CB but I do a whole lot on Ham Radio.I do AM most of the time on CB but Rarely on Ham Radio. Most locals here don't even have SSB except for the guys on the base CB's & even some of them don't. I have never really understood why SSB never became the dominate mode on CB. I suppose it is because of the lack of good stable (on freq.) radios from manufacturers. There are some stable ones, but not many. Uniden 980 the latest one I can think of. 73 Whitey

The only ones that I have heard that did not sound good were ones that the operator admitted to adjusting. The same goes for ones that had problems and sent back for repair, after questioning, the ole golden screwdriver seemed to be the cause. The 980 is a use as is radio, at least at the present time.

That's probably true for most radios. They tend to sound cleaner before the peaker-tweakers get to it.
