What is the best way to clean this plug? Is there any solvent or contact cleaner that is safe to use on this? ( both the male and female pins ) would deoxit be safe?

The quick answer is with a good solvent and paper towels, cotton swabs or any other soft non-abrasive medium. The long answer is that the best way is before the shiny plated coating on the blades becomes corroded. Once this happens, cleaning is no longer effective. Not for very long at a time, anyway. Exposing the base metal under the shiny electroplated layer causes it to oxidize and become noisy every few days or weeks. Constant cleaning becomes the only remedy once the damage is done. Can't resist adding that scraping the blade surfaces with a pocket knife or file just makes things worse. Removes that shiny plated layer altogether. Once the damage is done, the only way to "clean" the connection is to replace the plug. And if the connection is still noisy with a new, clean plug, that means the socket has to go, as well. 73
