I picked up this Hy-gain 7 base unit, modle 3087X AM only and according to the info i see on CB Trick's it's a PLL02A. The thing that has me fooled is the that cb trick's say's is a 23 channel, But this unit is 40 channel's. I see there are 3 different Hy-Gain 7's listed in cb trick's, 3077 is 23 channel and xtl matrix, 3087 is 23 channel and PLL02A, and the 3107 is 40 channel and PLL02A.
This radio is labled 3087X and 40 channel, I wonder if this radio was origionaly a 3087, 23 channel and factory moded to a 40 channel and relabled to a 3087X.
There were some 23 channel radio's sold around the time the 40 channel's were ready to come out and many company's were selling the 23 channel radio's with the option to convert them to 40 channel's after a perchace.
Any way, This radio has a bad hum in recieve using the AC cord, and it doesn't hum when plugged into 12 volt's. it also won't recieve or transmit, Some one has cut some trace's in the board by the PLL02A chip, But they have been rejumped. Just another mystory. lol

But while it is a factory made 40 channel, the board is likely the older 3 crystal 02A version. The 3107 model should have been made with the 2 crystal 02A board. Someone had their grubby fingers in there and likely screwed things up. You'll have fun trying to sort it all out. The hum on AC is possibly due to aging filter caps.

Replacing ALL of the electrolytic caps in the power supply might fix the hum.
And if it doesn't, that means the power supply has additional trouble.
Just the same, those capacitors are decades past their "use-by" date.

Thank's for the get back Sandbagger and Nomad.
I talked to Evan Hayden, he was a tech at Hy-gain in Lincoln, NE. when Hy-gain was in opperation and he said what i thought as well as Sandbagger's comment.
The X on the end of the 3087 ment the unti was indead modded at the Hy-gain factory and coverted to 40 channel's. In cb trick's under Hygain there is a section labled (Hygain cb radio service manual addendum) and the 3087X is listed and it has under it a schmatic for this radio.
According to the 3087, 3087A and 3087X schmatic;s, These all 3 take the 3 xtal 02A version's as Sandbagger said and the same goes for the 3107 02A and it has 2 xtal's. Another thing Evan said was that when they moded the 23's to 40 channel's, They changed the circut to the PLL and put a 40 channel, channel selector and dial in them. Evan did alot of the 40 channel mod's when he worked at hygain.
Another thing i see is the difference between the 3087 23 channel selector in the schmatic and the 3087A and X version 40 channel selector.
Evan also said the 3087 Hygain 7 had a Hygain 2 board in it. Some time i'll compair some of the board's in my spair hygain 2', 40 channel radio's and compair them to my 7 and see if it's posible to simply swap the hole board out to make this 7 work.
But looking at the hygain 2's and there front control's they include a fine control and PA in the squelch as well as the volume, where the hygain 1 only have the volume and squelch.
Where this 3087X hygain 7 only has the volume and squelch controls. It may be the hygain 7 has the hygain 1 board, not the hygain 2 board as Evan told me, So some compairing will be needed.
I have (8) hygain 1's and (7) hygain 2's for spair part's i can compair and some are 40 channel's
I'll also check the cap's and swap them out as Sandbagger and Nomad suggested.

C-ya Trapp You will find that different model AM radios in Hy-Gain's (and other makes) stable use the exact same Cybernet board. Additions such as delta tune, PA, RF Gain or local/distance etc. are options that can be connected or not depending on model. There will probably not be much difference between your Hy-Gain 1, 2 or 7, except for maybe the noise blanker circuit. I've seen them both with the parts installed, and not. There is also a difference in the PLL truth chart between the 3 crystal board and the later 2 crystal version. So the 40 channel switch from the 2 crystal board will not work correctly on the 3 crystal version
