I was looking on eBay and only one used likely working 40 channel AM base is listed for the lowest price of $100. Two under $100 were listed with broken issues (definitely not working). Rest were more expensive than $100. Also only about 20 used 40 channel bases for sale with over 100 23 channel bases on eBay. I guess 40 channel CB base radios are somewhat rare.

For the most part a base CB radio is nothing more than a mobile chassis and a power supply built together into 1 box.
Base radios seemed to be more popular in the early days of CB.
I myself prefer to have one, I just like the look.

No deals on 40 channel SSB/AM bases. Many are selling around $300 and more, Royce 1-642 went for $450. Cobra 142 GTL are around $300 and up. Best deal seem to be the Cobra 139 XLR for around $150 to $225. Inexpensive 40CH AM/SSB radios are mobiles. The mobile radios need a good used power supply for about $30 shipped. I would not use the common Radio Shack PS rated at 2.5 amps for a CB radio. The Cobra 148 GTL mobile draws 3 amps maximum per the specification sheet. 3 amp minimum for stock radios and 4 to 5 amps is best for peaked radios..

A good rule of thumb to use for buying a power supply is to use a minimum of 1.5 times the power required. I prefer to double it myself, but 1.5 times is pretty safe.

Hardly........ But it is the most pricey. Where does one buy vintage used CB radios besides eBay? Well, there is Craig's List, Facebook marketplace, Other sites on the internet, Hamfests, Flea Markets, Yard sales. You often get better prices, although you may have to work a bit harder. Ebay is where people try to get $200 for a $30 radio, or $1000 for a $250 radio.....No thanks.

Ebay can create feeding frenzies.
One example is the Pace 1000M which is just as previously described. It's the same stuff as the 1000B (ase) whose form factor is a large box with built in power supply and a few extras. Almost exact same performance.
Well......someone sez Smokey And The Bandit mobile rig was a Pace 1000M. Boom. Now people are asking large bux for them. Harr. Or maybe not harr. I gave a perfect mint one away to someone who wanted a basic CB back around 2010.
Sometimes one can be on the correct end of a feeding frenzy and make a few honest dollars. Personally, I have been there but it was a long while back. Makes for great war stories.

In the last two years President Washington CB prices have more than doubled. Some sell for $450 or even more now.

In the last two years President Washington CB prices have more than doubled. Some sell for $450 or even more now. That's simple insanity. They didn't sell for that much brand new. And 10 years ago (before the 10V caps started drying out en-masse), you could pick up just about any President (and many others) for less than $100, usually $50 or less depending on condition. If someone is bold enough to advertise for those insane prices, and someone else is crazy enough to pay it, then I guess the seller made out like a bandit. But I have to question the sanity and financial priorities (especially now with so many necessary goods becoming so expensive and leaves far less disposable income) of those who would pay crazy high prices for a 40+ year old radio. I got into collecting vintage radios because I could finally afford all of the fancy base radios that I drooled over as a teenager, and sold for $300+ back in the 70's, but I could now get for pennies on the dollar back in the 90's - 2000's. Heck, I even managed to score a Browning Golden Eagle MK III for $75. It was fun then. But if the new norm is hugely inflated pricing, I'm done. Heck I might as well unload my stuff. I might just make enough to buy a second hand bass boat.......
