Yesterday, on a lark, I checked several sale sites (Ebay, Goodwill, Craigslist etc)...and when I hit OfferUp I found this one had been listed two hours before....and RIGHT in my TOWN. When I contacted the seller.... he lived three minutes from me. A Midland 79-892 40 Channel SSB... for $30. I became the new owner and a basic bench check shows that it works.... in AM and Sideband. It might could benefit from at least an alignment but it looks like everything works as it sits. Another one for my retirement years!!!!

It might could benefit from at least an alignment but it looks like everything works as it sits. Another one for my retirement years!!!! Nice Cybernet 02A board. I had a Lafayette Telsat SSB-80, which was basically the same chassis. The one thing I didn't like about the Midland version, was their decision to put the clarifier on the mic. While it's convenient to have it there while driving, it makes it extremely difficult to adapt an amplified mic to the radio, which it really needs as the internal audio path lacks sufficient gain for a simple stock mic. At least on AM. SSB seems to be ok. Of course, with enough determination, it's not an insurmountable issue. I've seen guys who have added a dual pot to the RF gain spot and put the clarifier there. Another guy managed to add a clarifier pot to an amplified desk mic. Another guy built a preamp circuit and installed it in the radio to boost the stock mic. Whatever it takes. That's a lot of the fun in this hobby.
