Hello, got a handwired D201 that has static from the speaker even with the squelch all the way up. I am accruing the parts to recap the radio but was curious if anyone knew if there is a common cause of this? Thanks.

I remember reading a book on electronic servicing 50-plus years ago. It had been written in the 1950s, before solid-state took over. The advice for a problem you couldn't identify was to go with the odds. Single most-likely item to fail is a vacuum tube. This is a common way for a tube to fail. Next after that was electrolytic capacitors, second-most likely sort of item to fail.
Even 70 years ago.
Do you have a known-good spare 6GH8 or 12AX7? Those are the audio and squelch tubes. Lacking a tube tester, swapping a suspect tube with a known-good replacement may reveal the culprit.
At least your version of the D201 doesn't have plug-in printed circuit boards to cause this headache. A bad electrolytic cap could cause this sort of symptom, but it's not the most common way for one of those to fail.
