Kinda new at posting here and would like to relate a find I now have! Maybe someone can give me more info on what I have...
A friend of mine gave me an old 23 channel Cobra 135 SSB base, I reluctantly took it and being a SSB rig I did... What a find! A mod was done to it that now it has 60 plus channels from just below channel one to 27.575! The voice lock "slides" about five channels on every 23 channel detent and again on the "extras"! With the slide the "skips" are covered plus the A channels. The rig I guess is about 1974 vintage and I wired up a D104 amplified mic and does it ever talk! It hears very well too! The only problem I can find is the USB mode is way off from LSB, is this right for the mod? I do not want to mess with this fine rig as it works well now... Also as a bonus it came with some documents of a SSB group from the Chicago area from around the same time era! also owners manual with schematics too! Nice radio!
73 fer now... poikaa

Sounds like you found a nice SSB radio. I have an old Johnson 223 Messenger. I'd like an old tube radio with SSB. I don't know a whole lot about them but they fascinate me. Like my desire to have an old Heathkit. Whenever I was young and encountered a Ham in his shack they had a Heathkit. That would be cool.

I have one myself. They were fairly easy to add extra channels to, as you only needed to change one crystal to shift the whole range of 30 channels (23 standard, 5 RC's plus 24 and 25) up or down. Shifting those channels up by 30 would take you right about to 27.575 give or take. The clarifier on that radio is a bit tricky. Yes, it can be made to slide a few channels. But it also uses voltage offsets to the clarifier to provide the proper shifts for AM, USB, and LSB rather than using offset crystals like many other radios. The downside to this is that it become very difficult to maintain the proper offsets on all 3 modes as you move the clarifier further away from normal. That's why your USB frequency is off. But the radio is a nice one, and it does have nice audio.

I sure hope somebody has one of those 135's that is "parts only" I have a 135XLR that needs a Off/On switch. The old switch must be 'on',becoz it will turn off, I have to turn the alarm knob to get it on again. Also , it needs the correct power cord,it came with a 2 hole cord off of something, I dont know what but it works. The Cobra 85 uses the same style cord I think.Anybody got one reasonable ?

The Cobra 135 was a well made rig in its day. I have one and it works like a champ, except the power on switch is getting dirty and it buzzes up a storm when I first turn it on. I've been using the Auto switch and the clock instead. Some day I'll try disassembling the switch and see if I can clean up the contacts.
