I have been reading so much on other forums about Uniden thinking of stopping the production of c.b.radios and I ask myself what is the big hype all about? How many c.b. shops do you really go in too and see a bunch of c.b radios on display anyway, meaning the top two Cobra and Uniden? You visit online web sites and how many do you see, not many! For many years now your basic c.b.radio has been overlooked by most operators, so why all the hype? How many operators even go in to a shop and ask for a Cobra or a Uniden, not many! With the availability of export radios now your basic c.b. radio has gone to the way side, and who is to blame for this we all are to blame. When the export radios came into play in the 80's we all thought all this is great, no more having to add extra channels, no need to have echo mics because the radios have them built inside, more power ect , ect.
We all forgot about the Cobra 2000's &142's, Trams , Brownings, Uniden Washingtons & Madisons, the good basic good quality radios that we all grown to love and operate for so many years!
Radio has gotten so out of hand that with the big power ego people that we have out there today that there is not much place for your basic c.b.radio. It seems that radio now is about how far you can talk and how big of an amp you can run that a lot of operators have given up on talking to your buddy down the road.
Now when you go in to your local shop all you see is the Galaxy, Ranger radios, and maybe in the corner you may see a Cobra or a Uniden on the shelf if your lucky.
So I ask you why is everyone so worried about Uniden when they are not buying these radios anyway?
Maybe i'm just to stupid to see what the hype is all about
Radio now is all about DX, big radios and big amps
Half of the time when I key my Browning up I get guys coming back to me telling me I have a loud noise when I key up, but if I key up my 2990DX or my Delta Force and I have the echo on they come back and say oh that radio really rocks!
How so many people have forgotten about the good craftmanship that went into making the Brownings, Trams, Johnsons radios. Yeah these were the radios that we had that worked forever and hardly ever broke down. Now you buy these radios today and are taking them back to the shop next week because they are not working I will put a Browning or a Tram against any Galaxy or Ranger and I will blow your socks off with good clean audio
So if Uniden goes oh well, we as operators did this to ourselves by straying away from what made this hobby a great one. This is just my thoughts the way I have seen radio change over the past 31 years

Had emails the other day from a gentleman who was trying to find information about new base CB radios - he was wanting to buy one and asked for suggestions/info about what's available these days. In the back of my mind I thought I remembered that Cobra had abandoned the 2010's, but I went on a web safari trying to find out if ANYBODY offers a new ACTUAL base CB and I couldn't find any. Sure, there are export bases, but he was wanting a Type-Accepted actual CB base. This is truly sad folks!! And, like Grumpy has already stated, who's to blame? Well, we are to at least some extent - but I'm wondering just why all the manufacturers have dropped base radios?? I didn't find anything from Midland, Uniden or Cobra. Does anybody know of any company that offers a base?

This is sad but true. I'm trying to think of anyone that I talk to locally who runs a regular CB base besides myself and I can't think of anyone. My Washington and various tube sets including my Mark III are the radios I enjoy using the most. I did manage to find a couple of new Washingtons still for sale but thery are just about gone. Galaxy makes a 40 ch am/ssb base (kinda looks like a ham radio wana be) that is a regular cb and I believe it's type accepted. Lots of people ask me if I collect old cb's. The answer is h*** no I us 'em. Glen I might be able to find that gentleman a base station if he wants one. Barry

Glen here's another am only regular cb base I forgot about, The Cherokee 500 AM. I had the sideband version of this radio several years back. Although it wasn't a real screamer in the audio dept it worked pretty well and didn't break. It was type accepted.

Barry -
Thank you so much for the info about the Cherokee 500 base. I was afraid I might have deleted so many emails I had lost the guy's address but I checked and I still have a message that I sent to him. I'll drop him a line to let him know that model is on the market. I'll also ask if he would like to get in direct contact with you since I obviously know so little about current equipment. 73, Glenn

Hey, both Galaxy and Ranger have legitimate CB base stations. 40 channel AM/SSB. I think the Ranger might have weather but might be getting it confused with one of their 10 meter base stations. The Galaxy is a 2547 The Ranger is a 696 (yeah, there is also a mobile with this same number). Now I'm going off memory here so please don't shoot me if I'm wrong about these website addresses: www.galaxyradios.comwww.rangerusa.comLook under the CB Base and you will see they are both being made and can be purchased new. www.cbworldinformer.com did a review of the Galaxy about 2 years ago when it was brand new. A few fixes might have happened but they both appear to be quite nice, and 100% legal/FCC certified CB base stations. I hope this helps. Alsworld

Hello down there in NW Florida. Please send some nice weather up North. Hey Glen, there really isn't much to know about current 40 channel base stations cause what everyone has said on this thread is true. There simply isn't much left out there. 73's

It has the same board as the 959. the tr 696 f ssb is a base and the tr-696-fd1 is the mobil. I think the only differance is that the mobil is not ssb

I have a buddy who has a 2547 on base. Great sounding radio and it has SSB. That is a good option.

I Run a Cobra 139XLR all stock no mods. I like to keep it real. I just wish everyone one else would do the same. Also I use from time to time a President Grant (old version) again all stock.

I actually broke down and picked up a 2547 as my "newest" CB radio. All of my other radios are 60's through 80's vintage. I've played around with the audio section of the 2547 and put an EQ in the transmit line. It now passes audio from 80 to 9000 hz. Sounds pretty good with a Turner Super SideKick. One of these days I'd like to try a studio mic on it.... Attachments:

What a great post, read it from top to bottom. For those of us whom was fortunate to get involved in the early years, can only appreciate what this is all about. MODULATION AND I MEAN GOOD MODULATION is what it's all about. You know there was a time when PILLS (as they are called today) were not even thought of. Now look what it has evolved into, like said before, let's see who can out do the other person. Myself being out of touch with todays market, can really appreciate my old Tram Titan ll, just with a Big Stick in the late 60's, was so pleased just to set and talk/talk/ and talk. Thanks to all of you for keeping her going as was intended. 3's to ya!!!!! tripple nickel
