Why would anyone want to find a rusty Nissan in a barn?

What a great classic roundup last night. I had a blast. Band conditions were good too. Lots of checkins. Best that I heard Crazy Bob. Finally found the beam heading : )

Tonight was some of the most fun I had on the radio in a long time! That goes double for me Bob. I was tickled that we finally made a 2-way radio contact. Once you guys got the right beam heading down, you were really smokin' up our way. That's what classic radio is all about! It's not all about old radios (although that's a big part) but about enjoying the kind of radio fun we used to enjoy 30+ years ago.

Why would anyone want to find a rusty Nissan in a barn? Inside joke, referring to a past conversation. The person I was aiming that comment at (Monkey Man) is a Japanese car buff, and we had been talking about finding old classic American muscle cars hidden away in someone's old barn. I told him that his chances of finding a "classic" jap car that wasn't rusted way to nothing was probably slim as those vintage cars were noted for rust issues.

A dedicated group of classic CB radio enthusiasts from the Southeastern Pennsylvania area have set aside Wednesday nights from 8:00 to 10:00 Eastern Time, on Channel 13 for "Classic Radio Roundup", where we take the various pieces of our vintage 60's and 70's radio collections out for a spin. . Well, it's that time again as we anxiously approach another Wednesday night Classic Radio Roundup. Tonight, I plan on dusting off my original (I got it in 1974) Lafayette Comstat 25 and letting it play. Spitfire is leaning toward running a Browning Eagle MK IV, and hopefully Paul will throw together something to join in the fray this time. Well March 5th's roundup started out a little lean. Paul was once again notably absent, and Tim was also a no-show. But things became a lot more exciting when Crazy Bob, and his neighbor 334, managed to fine tune their antenna direction and they were able to make a 2-way radio contact with some of us up our way. According to Google Earth, it was about a 70 mile trip from my place to Bob's in a SSE direction. Not bad! One of Grumpy's neighbors (Billy Beer Can?) managed to be heard from Lancaster to south Jersey as well. Rigs heard were Browning Golden Eagles, a MK III (Crazy Bob) and a MK IV (Spitfire). Al checked in briefly with his SBE Console V, Art with his Royce 1-640, 334 with a Cobra 29, Brian with his Commanche Warrior, Last Chance (65) with a Tram 201, and I was running a Lafayette Comstat 25. The streaming audio server had up to 10 connections at one time, which pretty much tells me the connection issue has finally been solved.

The roundup sounded great on the streaming audio side...kept finding myself wanting to key up..lol...We need to find a way to use VOIP for the roundup... ..One of these Wednesday nights maybe conditions will be good for propagation up that way so I can join in as well...that Lafayette sounded great...some really BOOMING audio...makes me want to find one...meanwhile I let my Eagles idle with their new-found friend, A Varmint xl-250 while I wait for the skip conditions to improve ;D

It's Wednesday once again, and Classic Radio Roundup will hopefully usher in another couple of hours of old time radio fun. We might be a little lean though as my co-conspirator Spitfire will not be around tonight. Hopefully some of the other locals will take up the slack and maybe we'll be able to light up that path into south Jersey again as well. I think I'll run my Browning MK III tonight, since it's on the bench already......

I'll try my best to get in there tonight Dave. I know Pete is not available, as I was hoping to do a quick meet with him last Friday, but work got in the way. I'll catch him on the rebound. I missed my local pal Qamsolo jumping in there last week with his "classic" FT-897 ...oh well, you gotta run whacha brung. Hopefully, he will be getting a President Washington soon, as part of a family heirloom, and he will be another (ir)regular to the CRR. I'll try to get the Robyn fired up tonight, since my flooring is going in today, and that should be the end on all interior work on the new shack...errrr, I mean addition.

Hope to hear you in there tonight Paul. Maybe we'll get another good path down to Crazy Bob and co. Last week was a blast.....

Another great Classic Radio Roundup night. It was a bit different being on the RX only side, but hey I had fun anyway. Plenty of checkins both on air and on cyberspace. Looking forward to next week. I plan to debut my Poly Comm 23. C U next week.

I plan to debut my Poly Comm 23. C U next week. Yea, I was pleasently surprised. Each week seems to bring more people out of the woodwork showing off another nice old rig. Last night, there were: Olson 717, Johnson Messenger 250, A few Tram D201's (Trams seem to be very popular), Robyn T-123, Cobra 2000, Midland 13-880, and briefly a DeWald 1050, and my Browning MK III. I know quite a few people are hoping for some DX conditions to open up during the roundup so that they might be able to get in on the fun. I'm sure that once the Sporatic-E starts up in the summer, we'll get that chance. The downside to that is that some of the more distant locals will get lost in the noise. But a little variety is good...... Thanks too to all the guys who checked in to the chat room. Although, as Paul and I found out, it's tough to hold an on-air QSO and a keyboard chat at the same time ..... See you next week!

I had a good time on the air and in Grumpy's chatroom last night. Good to see Pete taking valuable time away from his vacation in the sandpile, to join us in the chatroom. At least he has his priorities straight Good to see Grumpy join us too. Although I had a hard time typing & talking at the same time, since the chatroom was pretty active,it was good to chat with everyone online. I hope more forum members jump in on the chatroom while the CRR is in session. Here is a pix of my Robyn I ran last night. Crazy Bob's Robyn seems to have a stronger 3.5 watt carrier than mine

So the streaming audio server is down until I get home from work to reset it. So don't worry, It'll be back on-line before CRR time!

That's a nice old Hygain there, Bob. Haven't seen one of those in awhile. I like your 1/4" guitar plug for the mic too. I use some of those plugs around here also, I still have a couple from the days when I was the light man and then drummer briefly with the Southern Rock band "The Great Train Robbery" from around Millvill, Delaware, back in the late seventies. We played all over the place, York, Pa., Baltimore, Towson, Md., Washington DC, Ocean City. Ah, the good old days.

It has to most accurate "S" meter of any radio I've ever seen. And the transmit audio is dynamite. Warm, full and deep. Yea, the clarifier slide on that rig was over the top. If you wanted, and were crazy enough, that thing could be made to drop 200 Khz. But it became really touchy and hard to tune at that point. I have mine set to do +/- 15 Khz. Fills in all the gaps that way and not too hard to tune.

There seems to be a growing group of guys on the New Jersey side, checking in. There are probably guys to the west of me too, but at the back of the beam, I don't hear as far. Last night I got a late start so I missed getting a good listen to Crazy Bob's Hy-Gain. I also seem to be having cable modem lockup problems, so for those guys listening on the audio stream, you probably dropped off occasionally, until I rebooted the modem again. If it's not one thing, it's another......Last night's rig roster included: Poly Comm 23 (the first 23 channel radio) Lafayette Comstat 35 Robyn T-240 Hy-Gain 623 Cobra 142 Cobra 135 I'm sure I also missed a few, but there's always next week. See you all then.

Hey, Sandbagger, glad to hear that CRR is going so great for you, wish that I was closer. The Sunday night channel 36 sideband net that we started here seems to be going full tilt too. It's amazing how people flock to things like your Roundup and the net here, goes to show that there are still real CBer's out there.

There were a TON of people who got into CB in the late 60's into the mid 70's before the real "fad" took off. Many of us, like myself, were young and impressionable then and the radio experience left a mark that refuses to fade. Many of us want to continue with our radio hobby, but we are a little disillusioned by some of the behaviors of the CB'ers of today, and would prefer things as they were 35 years ago. It's amazing the number of guys who sit dormant, and only listen. But start up something like an old time radio net, and these guys flock out of the woodwork. It's a wonderful thing, and I get a good feeling knowing I played a part in making it happen for so many people.

That is how I came up with the name "Grumpy's Olde Time Radio Forum". When I first got a computer in Jan.2002 I was surfing the net looking for stuff about CB Radios. I came across a few forums and they were OK, but most people were about big amps and export radios. Of course that wasn't my cup of tea so one night I was sitting at my desk with nothing to do so I did some research to find a forum host and well... here we are six years later. I have to say that Paul (2IR473) and Rich (Tombstone) have been my biggest suppoters from the very start. There were a few times I thought about shutting this forum down when I was sick and just plain tired of things. These two guys kept me going through it all and I owe much thanks to both of them. I have met some great people since I started this forum, and have made many life long friends. It kinda was like CB use to be in the old days, only over the net. And then came my buddy Dave (Sandbagger) with his great idea with the streaming audio server. Of course when he came up with the idea I was all for it. Maybe things are not what they were back in the early 70's, but I think most agree we are starting to have a lot of fun with this. Thanks to all who have stayed around all of these years and have pitched in to make this forum what it is today. It is really neat to go to some other forums and have this one mentioned from time to time when guys need info on Browning, Tram and other old tube type radios. There is no other forum like this one that I have found, and that has to do with all the many members here who love the classic radios. I can see the Classic Radio Roundup becomeing a very big hit as time goes on. Just wait till the skip cycle starts going. Your going to hear so many Browning, Trams and old tube radios strutting their stuff, the boys with their export toys will just sit back and wish their radios sounded that good ;D
I also want to mention that when the Classic Radio Roundup i going on, guys can jump in my chat room also. This is starting to pick up as well!!!

Thanks for the compliment, Scott, but that's my job on your forum and I have a blast doing it. I thought that I was alone out here until I got my first computer too. I was surfing for Browning information and that's how I found my home here.
