Will this radio take any vfo? Is there anyway to extend frequency range or are you just limited to the 5R and 5T? External VFO? Thanks this forums the best. I got my old whiteface working just would like to use it on other channels

A VFO would be very difficult to install on that radio because of the difference in the receive and transmit crystals. You'd be better off to add more crystals to get the frequencies you want. More crystal sockets will have to be added and a rotary switch, mounting the extra crystal block and switch might be an issue also. The connection wires must be kept as short as possible and crystals are expensive. You could leave the cover off and change crystals as needed. That's about as much as I can suggest unless someone knows more about this than I do. Good luck.

There are a few places that sell crystals, I know that Jan can cut any crystal that you need but they're expensive. Jan probably has a webite that you can contact them through.

Im gonna go out on a limb and see who chimes in. The one and two boxes take the exact freq on tx but the rx is the freq minus 455khz. Not sure what others work but this was easy to figure out. Having said that you "might" be able to use a switching system that will swap over a vfo to the rx side and introduce a cicuit to subtract 455khz while in rx and remove that circuit in tx. Otherwise, maybe 2 VFOs could do it. Just hope you dont have to run around the dial too often. Lets see what others think...

This is mostly a problem for software. Or firmware. Various external VFOs being sold now use a direct-digital synthesis chip (DDS) that has two separately programmable outputs. But since changing frequencies from a DDS is nearly instantaneous, just using the computer that runs the show to shift frequency between receive and transmit would work every bit as well. Troy radio has sold one as a "set-top-box" that would probably work, so long as the radio's transmit/receive switching had its own wire out of the radio into the external box. His price isn't cheap, but its value comes from the software in the box. Code you can't just download from Github. Web site is here: www.ddsvfo.com/Didn't see any sign he has this setup in the can, already written up. Pretty sure his STB would do it, though. 73
