Hello All, I need help with my Browning Mk.III. I have the transmitter working well, (so far), and all tubes checked and bad ones replaced. but I have no audio from the receiver. I did turn it on one time and started to get noise from the speaker as it warmed up, but it faded out before it got fully warmed. Can anyone give me a starting point for the problem??? I would really like to be running them when the weather is cool.
Thanks

A shot in the dark here. Could be that the transmit/receive relays need cleaned or that a wire has come loose in the control cable setup. Might be an intermittant connection in the coax jumper but what you describe I doubt if it's any problem like that except for the relays. The tube sockets or the tube pins themselves might be crudded up, spray tuner cleaner into the sockets with the radio off and unplugged and spray the tube pins. With the tubes back in it and the radio powered up wiggle them and see if you get receive then. Clean the tube pins and sockets one at a time so as to get them back in the sockets that they came from otherwise if you mix the tubes up you take a chance of throwing the alignment off even though some tubes are the same number. The problem could be a faulty electrolytic capacitor or a voltage problem. If one of the sections of the multi stage filter cap in the power supply of the receiver goes bad it will shut off the receive, mine did it. There are still a lot of variables. A silly thought but maybe the speaker is bad. Please be careful, there's high voltage present and I don't want to hear of someone getting hurt because of my suggestions. I hope that this helps you.

This is also a shot in the dark, but it happened to my MKlll. A crystal in the reciever cabinet failed. This happened many years ago. I believe it was the 31.4000 Mhz crystal. Hopefully your problem is just a faulty tube or electrolytic capacitor. Relays also get very finicky when dirty.

Yes, if the right crystal goes out that will shut off receive too.

Alright, thanks for the pointers. Sounds like it might be over my head though. Might be a good candidate for Barkettes. While I was in there I saw some other stuff that didn't look kosher, too.

Yeah, Junior, if you think it's going to give you too much of a hard time, rather than mess things up send it to Greg. He did my Browning Series II receiver, nice work. I worked on it 'till my brain housing almost cracked so I broke down and sent the thing to him.

Thanks for the guidance geuy but after looking for simple things to repair, and seeing things that dont look right to me, I spoke with Greg and shipped it to him this morning. I do know my limits afterall When I get it back, I hope to be good to go. I bought this radio off of ebay. It was advertised as being in good working order I have fixed several things myself, and have the transmitter working ok, but I have never gotten the receive working. Oh Well. Thanks again,

Hey Gator, Ft. Myers Area. If I go much further south, I fall off of the world! With a name like gator, sounds like you might be familiar with the area? Junior

Yes, I guess working means it lights up! I tried to clarify the meaning before I bought it, and the seller said that he was using it daily, but when i received it, I knew differently!!! I told him that, and he said to make an insurance claim on it!!!. Well, at least it looks real nice.

JR,
I am in the Deltona area. About 40 Min's up I - 4 from Orlando. Yes, I lived in Miami for 12 years. The Gator comes from my daughter went to UF. Hence the Gator. I hang out on channel 15. The local call channel. Talk on 24 mostly. Also listen to Ch 30 in the early am to a bunch of guys who get together between 5 - 7am Sorry to hear about the MK III problem. But like you said. At least it looks good.

Sounds like you have some radio activity in your area. Down here, the only activity is on 15, and most of the people are so far from me, I can not hear them. I can hear maybe 5 people well. And yes, it looks nice on the shelf.

That would be great for me, but what will they say about it. I am listening to the Tram right noe, and the strongest signal is a 1. Three people that I can hear at all.
LOL
Not like the good old days, is it?

Yes, I started in 1965 with my dad. We had a Courier 23 Base and a Courier 1M mobile. Back then many of the local CB clubs kept thing in order. Or at least in the town I was in at that time. Now, its every man for himself. And who has the most power. Too bad we can't turn back the clock Junior.

As for your issue not hearing much. Maybe a 50' tower would fix some of that. Couldn't hurt. And a nice 4 element beam might help also. We have had 1 or two guys from FT Meyers work some of the locals in the early am on channel 30. But both ends had some power and big antennas. But they were S.W. of me. Let us know how that eagle sounds when you get it back. 73 and happy Thanksgiving. Gator.

They must keep the beam pointed yourway then.LOL. Yes a 50' tower might help out, but my neighbors might have a few choice words for me. Maybe a better antenna? My bigstick is tied up in a palm tree and only at about 20' to the tip. I dont have much room for a big antenna, so I make do with what I have. Gotta love those antiques!!!!!

Well, Maybe a push up pole in that palm tree then? You definitely need more height. I understand about the neighbor thing. Mine is not real radio friendly either.
Hope you can work something out.

Hey Junior, That great news on the receiver. Greg fixed my MK III awhile back. Yeah, it sounds like the height is your problem. Titian II. Nice classic rig. That is one radio I have always waited. Take care. Gator

I gotta tell ya, it is one talking radio. I was told yesterday about the quality of audio!!! Not really loud, but man is it sweet! And the receive is really good too. And it is a BIG radio. I have some dirty switches to clean up, and the crystal switch is a bit sloppy, but it is a great radio.

Alright, You got me motivated today, so I welded together three sections of fence post and moved my antenna to the other side of the house,( neighbors plasma tv was the source of the noise in my radios), and got it up in the air a bit too. I will let you know if it helps if anyone ever talks around here.
