I was just wondering if there is a modulation adjustment on the TitanII or if I should try a modulated mike. Would like to try a littlt more punch!
Thanks

Junior, I think the Titan II should have all the audio you need with out a amplified mike. I would consider a Unamplified D 104 or a turner. Both of those mikes should drive the titan. As for the adjustment. Maybe mark 4, 2600, or sandbagger can help w/ that question. 73's Gator

Thanks for the answer, I am running a D104 unamplified, and according to my meters, I am only hitting around 80% with good tubes. Getting good reports, but thought a little more audio punch might help. Reports are that I am not real loud, but have good quality audio. Maybe all is as it should be.

The stock radio has two limiters. The first one is intended to be a compressor, so your distance from the mike makes less difference, automatically boosting the mike gain when you move farther from it.
The second one is the more-traditional modulation limiter circuit.
Neither one is adjustable. At all.
Since this radio lacks a front-panel mike-gain control, cutting the limiters gets tricky, since you can't turn it down from the outside of the radio.
I won't recommend modding the limiter, unless you're confident of your high-voltage safety training. The stuff in that radio packs a wallop, if you put yourself across the voltages inside it.

Thanks 2600,
I will leave it alone. You dont suggest licking a finger and poking around in the radio while barefoot on a concrete floor as an expedient test procedure? ;D

2600, I notice that I really have to be up on the mic to get much modulation, and then I can get close to 100%, so maybe the compressor circuit is not operating correctly? Any suggestions?

Well, just playing the percentages, tubes would be the first failures to expect. A tester can be helpful, or spares that you know are good.
But without a tester, how would you know which ones are or aren't good?
Next in line down the probability list are electrolytic capacitors. They aren't really supposed to last more than 20 years, let alone 40 years.
You could feed a steady sine-wave tone into the mike jack, and follow the signal with a 'scope, to see where the audio level is falling off.
That's where I would look first, anyway.

Thanks for the advice 2600, As stated in earlier posts, I have tested all tubes and the all check fine. I get gret audio reports with the quality of the Tram audio ;D, But the mod meter just doesnt go up like I am used too. This is probably because of the limiter and processor you told me about. On both mics, the mod meter starts to swing hard, but when it gets about half scale, it hits the brakes and will slowly climb to about 75-80 %. If you keep whistleing long enough.

Junior I'm not sure about the Titan II, but the Titan IIa has a limiter adjustment. On mine it's a blue pot soldered to the base of the audio output tube. If yours is similar, you could adjust it for a little more audio punch.

How are these radios? My brother can get me one cheap, but looks to be in poor shape.

Sandbagger, I do not have a monual for this radio, so could you point me toward the correct tube to look for? Thanks. Alabama Tick, I really like the radio. It looks cool, and I get great reports too. Receive seems above average too! Like any old tube equipment, they require loving care, and maintainance, too.
