Hi Ya'll-
Back in the 1970's there was an .64 wave antenna by the name of a Taylor GLR-4 "Grandslammer" - does anyone have any information on this antenna??
Thanks C. Adams

Yes, I had one in 1975. It was made from 6061 T6 aluminum and used a simple tapped coil for matching. It measured a total of 23' 6" tall, had a 276.5" radiator and was tuned for Channel 13 (27.115 MHz) the ~center of the old 23 channel CB band. I sold it and bought a Penetrator because it was far too flexible and actually was tapping the neighbor's roof next door when one of my guy wires broke during a storm. Between the 12' long, 2" diameter piece of 6061 T6 tubing I was using for the bottom of my make-shift 3 section mast (2 section telescoping Rohn inside on top) that broken guy wire, and it's rather slim, (1.125" bottom, .25" top) radiator, that antenna/mast combination flexed like 55' of rubber. To it's credit, it didn't fold or permanently bend but it made an Imax2000 look like a 4"x4", even in a gentle breeze. The modern-day equivalent in performance would be the commercial quality $339 I-10K from A1 Antennas, www.a1antennas.com/trombone.htmlbut lose the top hat, lengthen the radiator to ~276", then re-tune the flute, uhm, tuba... sorry, TROMBONE match for 1:1 swr & X=0. ...or just buy a Sirio Gain Master for $200 shipped and keep your power down within it's power handling limit of 1KW pep.

The top hat on the I-10K helps reduce static. Don't lose it.

yup that Taylor .64 i think was the best ever made i had one also in the 70's it out performed my super scanner as well as my super penatrator. it's funny how they are rarely mentioned when threads come up about best ground plane antennas on any radio forum around the web. but i tell ya the Gain Master is for real. so far only antenna i have tested against is my old Maco V5000 it replaced. there has been an improvment on TX & RX and as another poster stated before just keep your watts below 500 and you will be find. it's been fantastic for me on SSB where i talk 99.5% of the time. on SSB i rarely see any cause to run more then 200 watts.
