Check the crystal charts on CBC International. According to the them the radio is synthesized. You can change mixer crystals and go up or down, how far before the power drops off depends on how wide banded the radio is.

I have one, I have the lower chnls in it, some chap ..wolfman put them in, he ran a wire from the pll chip to the anl, He got the wiring from some cd volume he has for mods.
It works good, runs around 10 watts from 3 watts dead swing, just a weee bit of lighting dim when I give it to much modulation, but it works great.

I wasn't aware that the radio is a PLL chip setup but lately I'm not aware of a lot of things. Getting extras with the chip would be the easiest and an Expo expander kit can probably be used too. What model kit I don't know but I think they're discontinued so finding one might be a little difficult??

Tombstone The original 23 channel CAM 89 (and if it's a 1974 vintage, it should be) was not a PLL, but rather your basic crystal synthesizer. The Cobra CAM 89 XLR 40 channel was a PLL, but that didn't come out until 1977. We used to swap mixer crystals to get another group of 23 lower channels. The receive was not as good since you were using the receiver's image, but it was good enough to use for local talking when the skip was heavy, or some idiot was dumping carriers

Thanks Sandbagger! Do you remember the crystal numbers for lower channels or can you go to a crystal chart and start subtracting by a value of .50 and use those crystals for lower channels? thanks in advance for any reply. ;D

(Channels 1 - 4). You can simply subtract .05 Mhz from there to give blocks of 5 channel spans below channel 1. I wouldn't go too far, as the radio's tuning will not allow max performance as you go farther away from the normal 23 channels.

I have a 23.240, & a 23.190 if you need them. they are the plug-in type HC/25? They can be soldered it. They will give you 26.865-26.955.

TO ANYONE READING THIS POST! I haven't been a member of Grumpy's very long nor have I posted a great number of posts, but if crazybob is an example of the people that regularly use this website then there are a lot of great folks here. I will continue to view Grumpy's daily and recommend it to my other local cb friends. Again thanks crazybob.............

8-)Well I got the two crystals from crazybob ( 23.240 & 23.190 ) and I plugged them in and immediately began talking to a fellow cb'r who had a cobra 200 with uppers and lowers. I did not have a frequency counter at the time, but as I would move from frq. to frq. he would tell me what I was on and I wrote them down. It all worked great, again thanks to crazybob for being a mighty fine feller!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D ;D

Hey, they were just laying around. I'm glad you got them & use them. When the skip comes back, I'll be on those channels most of the time. I'll prbably talk to you. I like old time CB radio becuase it takes me back to my younger days. America was still America. I hope that CB never dies, ..Just like drive-in theatres.
