Does anyone have any suggestions how to stop the annoying "pop" you get when you place a Tram D201 into transmit while in the AM mode? When in SSB mode the xmit/rec switching is totally smooth and all you can hear is the relay clicking... The loud pop in AM mode is annoying. Other than that, radio works 100%. Thanks and I do enjoy the forum here!

Thanks and I do enjoy the forum here! I notice what you are talking about. But quite frankly I don't think the pop is all that loud. In fact, my Tram Titan is far worse. How you would get rid of the pop, I'm not really sure if you can. You might be able to soften it by putting capacitors across the relay contacts of the offending circuit. But I haven't tried this and it may not help or may cause another problem. It's funny how some radios with relays pop very loudly, while others do not. It's all in the design....

More than once I have seen this caused by a relay wearing out.
Not sure if any of the electrolytic caps will do this when they wear out, but it's possible. They can cause any number of other odd noises when they dry out and die from age and/or use.

Well, It may just be part of the design in the AM mode... Mine has done that since I first bought it back in the early 80's. I will take a little look and I did put a new relay in and it made no difference. I thought I would ask because it has never done it in SSB mode. Wish somebody had a nice PLL board to plop into these D201's with a digital channel display. That would sure bring them into the new century!

Pretty much every Tram I have had and herd over the air has that pop sound. you can pretty much pick a Tram out of a bunch of other radios like the ping of a Browning. That pop IMO was designed in for a signature sound.

That's Called the TRAM SLAP, I remember hearing trams/brownings long ago the birds pinged and the trams had that very noticeable slap sound which I always thought was pretty distinctive and almost famous like the birds ping! DQRR

Especially the TITAN, if ur on the receiving end, just listen closely when they key up....now that's a unique keyup! DQRR

Back in 1974-76, I had a Tram Titan II. I loved the way it would transmit a loud CLUNK, every time I keyed it up.
Only rich people had Brownings back then.

Most of the rest of us "regular folk" ran Midlands, Lafayettes, or Realistics. With a smattering of SBE's and Cobras too.

DQRR I don't know about what it sounds like on someone else's receive, but the "slap" of my Titan's relay on my end is pretty loud. It's not a radio I can run when people in the next room are trying to sleep......

You're right Dave. I paid 300.00 for the Tram, & it was almost a months pay! There were quite a few Trams for sale (Titan, Titan II, III,IV, Cosair), but Brownings were rare.
Mostly peolple ran Comstat's, Cam 88's, Black-faced Couierrs, Console II's, Navaho's, & Sonar's.
The Tram had a relay "clunk" that went out on the air. I've had a few Trams that made a loud "pop" when I un-keyed. ..Woke up half of the nieghborhood!

Mine pops both on key-up and when unkeying but it's a soft pop....not loud or harsh whatsoever. No one's ever mentioned hearing a pop in my transmit, but they've all told me there's a distinct "clink" when I first key up. I presume it's the D-104 because it definitely clinks when I choke it.
BTW, mine pops the same on SSB also.

I will throw in my 2 cents on the relay pop issue. I had a early 60's Courier 23 that had such a loud relay snap. I had to move the radio shack to the basement. Only problem, It still would wake my daughter (baby) from a sound sleep. And yes Sandbagger i would hear about that relay pop every time i keyed up. I tried cleaning the contacts, everything i could think of. Nothing worked. I wish i kept that old Courier. 73's
