Just picked up a TRC-451 Don't think it was ever used. But is dead keying 12 watts and there is no audio on AM. But the mod light flashes and also flickers sometimes on receive. Thinking maybe a bad cap. Any help from the other techs appreciated.

I think this is the radio with no paperwork. There is neither a SAMS, nor a service manual. 12W output sounds like a hack job. Bet there is some sort of kit in there.

The fact that the radio dead keys at such a high level AND has no modulation makes me suspect a shorted modulator/regulator transistor (TR44 2SA1012) or one of the other related transitors which drive it. I'm assuming there's no problem with SSB or receive audio.

The modulation light does flicker on transmit but shouldn't do that on receive. I have had the same trouble with a 451 one time and mine turned out to be an intermitent mic short. I love the TRC-451 I have 3-of them. Use 'em for base and mobile. I just bought a new-in-the-box one this week and am using it for my base. I bought a N.I.B original President Washington a few months ago, it was brand new never been touched, I got it at Goodwill!!! But the TRC-451 can hear things the Washington just can't. A mild tune on the realistic will have you around 18-20 watts on SSB with loud clear sound.

I'll be damned, Dave! That wasn't there the last time I looked. He must have added it recently. That is great news for a classic radio.

Sand bagger I was looking TR44 it was not shorted. I found the problem late last night. Turned out to be a shorted cap. 100uf 10V. Replaced it and it operates like a charm! I also have NOS one I just purchased. Awesome radio.

I also have NOS one I just purchased. Awesome radio. Ah! The 10V blues. That's a big problem in those 1980-ish vintage Uniden chassis radios. The TRC-451 is a great performing radio. The noise floor is very low and it hears very well. It works fabulously on SSB and has nice AM audio. It also has one of Uniden's very effective noise blanker circuits. The only downside to the radio is that it doesn't mod easily for out of band channels. But that's not an issue for me, as I don't venture out of band much, and I have other radios that will if the urge grabs me.

IIRC i think the 451 actually has a built in speech compression circuit. I know one of those older Realistic mobile SSB rigs had one built in.

It has some of the best audio on AM/SSB I have ever heard come out of a solid state radio. I run it with my Silver Eagle on SSB and some of the guys around here with there $2000 rigs and up said it sounds wonderful.
