Like I got nothing better to do. A friend asked me if I could take the SWR pot and use it for variable power. I have not checked the values, but assuming they are close, would it work?

Yes it will work, and if you're slick enough, you can put a pair of fixed resistors or a pc mount pot on the wires that you remove from the SWR calibrate pot, and you can set it to full scale at say, 3 watts, and you can retain SWR functionality. If the cal point moves from full scale, you can adjust the variable power to bring it back. I did that to a SuperStar 360 I had back in the 80's......

The SWR pot is the same value as the AM power pot. Worked like a charm. However, the radio was in pretty poor condition. I have to Krud Kutter the face and knobs. I told the guy to get a new face. And if he saw what came off of it, he would probably quit smoking.
